“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

50 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden yellow to orange with a dense, huge and white head. Mild bitterhops and faint smoke aroma. Mild creamy mouthfeel. Nice cornish medium sweet flavour and light hoppy bitterness lurking through. Dry almost wooden finish with a slowly building bitterness.

A yellow beer with a disappearing white head. The aroma is smoked - reminds me of tared rope. The flavor is sweet and lovely smoked - giving it hints of tared rope, combined with strong notes of wood, leading to a dry end. Nice. Thanks Dalle for getting this.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2013 Bottled (2007). Yellow colour, small white head. Aroma is mild smoke, maize and diacetyl. Flavour is diacetyl diacetyl, maize and some mild hoppyness. Mild smoke as it gets a bit warmer. 4 2 3 2 7

Bottled (2013, from K Citymarket Kivihaka, Vaasa). Golden colour, mediumsized white head. Aroma is mild toasted malts, some grains, herbs and a bit mint like notes. Flavour is mild toasted malts, some quite strong grassy and hayish notes along with mild meaty notes. Also a bit metallic notes as it warms up. Still better than the diacetyl mess I had in 2007. 6 3 4 3 10.

Bottled. Pale yellow. Smoked sausage aroma. Light bodied, but with dense malty mouthfeel. Nearly as smokey as the other Schlenkerlas.

Bottle at Paradiso Dupont. Hazy yellow. Lacks the typical rauchbier notes of burnt pork and ahstray that the rest of the series has. Didn’t help that we tasted this one side by side with the Eiche Doppelbock, the difference was massive.

Papsoe (25062) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - JUL 4, 2005
(Bottle 50 cl) Clear, pilsener-golden beer with a small, white head. Faint smoked aromas and some sweet malt in the flavour. Weak smoky notes that are rather enticing - because of their lightness. Fresh and surprisingly easy to dring for a "Rauchbier". Brauerei Heller really cannot stay away from smoked malt - no matter what the base beer is. 300605

bottle at home ... golden yellow ... thin white lacing ... soft grassy nose ... soft fruits ... light grassy fruits ... tiniest hint of smoke ... really not me,
