“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Taster at Binn’y, Orland Park. A representative was there to explain that does not use smoked malt, but is made using the same equipment that’s used for the brewer’s smoked beers, and this is just picking up the residuals. So yes, it does have a lighter smoke flavor, which seems to be in proportion to its lighter lager malt color. Not half bad, kinda like the Tinkoff rauchbeer I had in Russia (also a lightly smoked pale beer). Gets in a few vanilla notes toward the end. Admittedly, you still have to be ready for smoked beer before you’ll enjoy this, but it works for me.

Pours gold from the bottle. Thick, frothy white head that sticks to the glass in a web of lacing. Aroma is smoke, bacon. Taste is bittersweet with smoked undertones. Body is medium with a texture that is both watery and oily. Pleasant.

A light sweet smell, malt and some hops. The head is rather large, white and foamy with a normal duration. The body is dark yellow. A light bitter taste, also a weak metallic note. The body is light and a little bit creamy with a lively carbonation.

UPDATED: NOV 3, 2017 Bottle. Clear yellow/gold with a firm head. Aroma of grains and some subtle smoke. Taste is grainy, bready, a little bit spicy and mildly hoppy. Delicate smoke is very well integrated. Thankfully it's rather peat and wood than bacon. Medium to strong carbonation. Very balanced, very süffig. A lovely light Lager.

There's no drink in the world that's quite like a classic German Lager and Schlenkerla's Helles Lagerbier is a beauty. Its pour is golden and sudsy. Hoppy earthy, grains, and smoked malt smells. The smoke makes for a very subtle meaty element in the brew. Otherwise, taste is very typical for the style: clean cereal grain start and a grassy, hoppy finish. Smooth, crisp texturing. Mildly bitter. Timeless and tasty.

Bottle from Beer Gonzo. Clear pale golden with a thin white head. Nose is pale malt, caramel, light smoke. Taste is sweet malt, toffee, barley, light wood, moderate smoke. Medium bodied, light spritzy carbonation, dry subtly smoky finish. Lovely!

Bottle from Oddbins Rosemount. Pours a clear gold with an abundance of bubbles finished off with a tall fluffy white head. Lager perfection. I cannot wait to get at this beer. After the initial sniff, I'm blown away by the spicy character. I was fully expecting to have to scratch around for aromas but they're here and correct. A dry sweet malt that doesn't lean into syrupy realms backs up the spicy warmth. Everything clean and tidy. The taste has the light sweet malt followed by the spice which carries a mild earthy bitterness across the tongue. Although nothing here is earth-shattering, this is balanced perfectly as a lager should. The palate is the only thing here I find fault with. It's light and refreshing with a dry gentle to moderate sparkle but the finish softens too quickly for me and I would have liked a crisper sharper finish. Nevertheless, everything is light and pitched straight at refreshment. This is lager. Brilliant.

A solid Helles. Nicely balanced. Not one I will seek out, but would gladly enjoy it if ever I come across it again ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
