“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Bottle. Clear golden amber, with a medium quick dissipating head. Malty aroma, wet hops with honey and apples. I missed the smokiness in the first few sips, it’s got a bit of honey sweetness to it. After that the smoke takes hold, it’s more subtle than the other schlenkerla beers, but very noticeable in this more delicate style. When the smoke clears, the body emerges a little bit on the thin side, and hints of plastic linger. I think this has some interesting food and beer pairing potential, more so than their other brews. Being a fan of both smoked and helles styles, I found this justa little less satisfying than other beers of equal quality in each independent style. Regardless, good overall.

Bottle from Beer Gonzo. Clear pale golden with a thin white head. Nose is pale malt, caramel, light smoke. Taste is sweet malt, toffee, barley, light wood, moderate smoke. Medium bodied, light spritzy carbonation, dry subtly smoky finish. Lovely!

Bottle. Aroma of smoke, light sulphur and malt. Clear golden with white head. Taste is smoke, light bitter and dry. Light body, watery feel and smoke malt finish.

Bottle from Oddbins Rosemount. Pours a clear gold with an abundance of bubbles finished off with a tall fluffy white head. Lager perfection. I cannot wait to get at this beer. After the initial sniff, I'm blown away by the spicy character. I was fully expecting to have to scratch around for aromas but they're here and correct. A dry sweet malt that doesn't lean into syrupy realms backs up the spicy warmth. Everything clean and tidy. The taste has the light sweet malt followed by the spice which carries a mild earthy bitterness across the tongue. Although nothing here is earth-shattering, this is balanced perfectly as a lager should. The palate is the only thing here I find fault with. It's light and refreshing with a dry gentle to moderate sparkle but the finish softens too quickly for me and I would have liked a crisper sharper finish. Nevertheless, everything is light and pitched straight at refreshment. This is lager. Brilliant.

A solid Helles. Nicely balanced. Not one I will seek out, but would gladly enjoy it if ever I come across it again ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dorato limpido con cappello di schiuma bianca dalla lunga persistenza. Al naso miele e cereale, lieve erbaceo e affumicato. In bocca crosta di pane e affumicato. Amaro erbaceo molto pronunciato. Corpo medio leggero e carbonazione spinta.

clear deep golden colour with medium white foam. Aromas of honey and bacon with sweet malty and sweet rye notes with a touch of sweet flowers. Palate, medium body with smooth milky texture leaving sweet malty finish. Taste, sweet of pale malts and grains with slight sweet honey and vanilla notes with this lingering in the darkness at the back in the deep, strong but sweet, rye and smokey salami touch which does not interfere but it lurks there.

0,5 l Flasche. Goldenes Bier, grobporiger, stabiler Schaum, schöne Gardine. Riecht rauchig. Schmeckt malzig süß, nur leicht rauchig, insbesondere im Abgang.

From the bottle. Very good quality Helles, full taste, fresh, lives up the expectation on a Franconian beer.

Bottle. Pours light classic lager yellow. Minimal head. Aroma of subtle beech smoke, nitrates, salami. Taste is lager sweetness with subtle underlying smoke and barnyard. Very good.
