3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Rated 2004-02-04. Dark brown, big beige head which lowers slowly, moderate lace. Very smoky, ham-like, malty, tar and wooden aroma. Pretty full-bodied. Malty and smoky, slightly ham-like, sweet flavor with notes of tar and wood. Long and smoky finish. Very nice smoked beer, especially aroma is nice.
(500 ml bottle) They say this is the marmite of the beer world. Many compare it to liquid bacon, owing to the malt being smoked over beachwood chips. I open the bottle with due apprehension...
Pours a clear, ruby-chestnut beer, with fine carbonation, and a foamy off-white head. An aroma reminiscent of applewood-smoked Cheddar floods out of the bottle. This is accompanied by a strong note of brown tanned leather, oak, and a hint of vanilla cream. Dark toffee base-malts lie beneath the heady vapours, with a distant hint of dark chocolate. The beer feels fairly thin on the palate, and is comparable to drinking a glass of milk. Smooth, and only slightly effervescent. Savoury to the taste, and pleasantly bittersweet.
This smoked German beer is quite unique, and balanced on a knife-edge: it's easy to see how the smoky fug can knock a man for six. An excellent accompaniment to mature Cheddar cheese, smoked salmon, salami, and rich winter stews. sam_uk93 (22) - West Sussex, ENGLAND - SEP 17, 2017
Aroma is extremely smokey with some sweetness. Taste nice and smokey up front, leading to a very nice rich, smokey, meaty flavour, smoked paprika (not spicy). Strong sausage flavour also! Never had a beer with such an interesting smokey, meaty flavour, intriguing! Medium bodied. A must try, certainly wouldn't be everyone's kind of beer but I think it's great.

UPDATED: SEP 8, 2017 deep bronw body with cappuccino foam smoked and toasted flavour. Light body. toasted and alcoholic taste. I like this beer, but I don't find it well balanced. DavidSvinth (144) - DENMARK - SEP 7, 2017
UPDATED: SEP 7, 2017 Røg, røg og atter røg. Ikke brændt malt eller toast. Det er gammel røg, og det er gennemtrængende. Unik oplevelse.

My first smokebeer. Bottle from Total Wine in Myer’s Park, Charlotte, NC. Pours red-brown, nose is smoked meat, malt. Medium bodied, tastes of smoked bacon, smokiness lingers. Heavy lacing after finishing. Would think of pairing this with charcoal grilled foods, bbq, brats. Very impressed with the style, will definitely buy again.
