Has a dark brown color. Smell is of smoked meats. Taste is smoke, bacon, very meaty, something I cannot get into. Overall I was unable to finish the glass.

Bottle. BBE Nov 2017; Drank early Oct 2017 and Draught at GBBF 2017, Olympia, London, Aug 2017 - Dark red brown in colour. Medium foamy beige head. Fair lacing. Lovely smokey aroma. Very Malty; smoked malts, toasty, smoked ham, smoked sausage, campfire. Hoppy; moderate hop bitterness. Quite dry. Fantastic smoked malts taste. So drinkable. Always good. Genuinely, a classic beer. bottle. light brown with one finger head. huge smokey bacon aroma. Big smoke, caramel and brown sugar. I'm not a big fan of smokey beers, but it's clear that this is well executed. Couleur brune/rougeâte visuellement propre, c'est beau. Mousse correcte, tenue une poil faiblarde. Nez sur le jambon très fumé, donc pas de doute là-dessus, c'est de la grosse rauchbier. En bouche j'ai plutôt l'impression que ça sent le mégot froid. Aucune évolution lorsque la bière se réchauffe. En bouche, sur la longueur les notes de jambon fumé apparaissent mais bon, faut quand même se taper la cendre de clope au préalable. Sinon ça manque de corps également. Bref, pas fan. Du tout...

For sure not everybody's favorite, but Rauchbier in general, and Schlenkerla in particular, are one of these extraordinary alternatives to the classic brews. (500 ml bottle) They say this is the marmite of the beer world. Many compare it to liquid bacon, owing to the malt being smoked over beachwood chips. I open the bottle with due apprehension...
Pours a clear, ruby-chestnut beer, with fine carbonation, and a foamy off-white head. An aroma reminiscent of applewood-smoked Cheddar floods out of the bottle. This is accompanied by a strong note of brown tanned leather, oak, and a hint of vanilla cream. Dark toffee base-malts lie beneath the heady vapours, with a distant hint of dark chocolate. The beer feels fairly thin on the palate, and is comparable to drinking a glass of milk. Smooth, and only slightly effervescent. Savoury to the taste, and pleasantly bittersweet.
This smoked German beer is quite unique, and balanced on a knife-edge: it's easy to see how the smoky fug can knock a man for six. An excellent accompaniment to mature Cheddar cheese, smoked salmon, salami, and rich winter stews.
