UPDATED: MAR 4, 2006 Brownish-red, alluring color. Silky beige head. Had a 750ml bottle last week and was floored at how good it was. This one seems to be a little harsher. Might be better to let it mellow out for a few months. Like the last reviewer said this is kinda similar to Chimay red, which is a plus. Though Chimay is superior to this. Affligem abbey dubbel has some plum, raisin notes. Bitter spicy finish. This bottle seems a little offensive.

750 bottle. Pours copper beer with a big orange head that drops away after a short while. Aroma is very pleasant fruity, musty yeast. Flavor is also a musty yeasty affair with malts, spices, and fruits, mostly prune. Typical dubbel flavors. This is strongly reminiscent of Chimay, which I dont like. Thankfully, this is less offensive than the Chimay. Thin at times, and astringent at first, but smoothes out a bit as you finish the glass. The alcohol is well concealed but noticeable and good for a nice buzz at 7% Not spectacular but nice. Not a bad buy at $4.99 from Broudys, Jacksonville FL.

(bottle) Reddish amber colour with a fluffy beige foam, slowly lacing. Dusty and dry toasted malts aroma with caramel, dried fruits and a herbal and coriander spicy touch. Light sweet initial maltininess with caramel and chocolate notes; medium bodied, lively carbonated; dry malty and spicy finish.

Pours copper with the biggest head Ive ever seen. It aint goin away any time soon, either. Yeasty and herbal aroma, with fruitiness coming in on the second whiff. An interesting fruitiness, too, like pear, grape, and honeydew. Heathers in there, as well. Flavor falls far short--sweet (fruit, light candi sugar) and somewhat musty, with a dry, slightly bitter finish. Thin mouthfeel.

Slightly hazy dark amber with a full, lasting off-white head. Musty yeast in the aroma, followed by a sweet melon-lavender fruitiness. The flavour was masked at first by prickly carbonation, but the orange-peel and sweet malt emerged, followed by a bitter aftertaste.

Bottle: Reddish-amber coloured, small, but very firm off-white head; fruity (lemon, orange, orange-peel), herbal nose with a tinge of turpentine (?); swee-malty and fruity (citrus) flavour, a bit vinous, too, creamy, but also fizzy mouthfeel; fruity finish with some late hoppy bitterness. O.K. and pleasant, much better than - from Heineken - expected................

Reddish brown hazy hue with substantial off-white head. The aroma was malty and fruity, with some figs, cabernet, toffee, and spice hints. The flavor was also malty and fruity, with that unique Abbey profile that it tough to pinpoint in a description. Velvety palate, but the flavor doesnt exceed or even approach the worlds best abbey dubbels.
