COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Orange Wax (or Reddish orange). Originally an Against the Grain Brewery and Brouwerij De Molen collaboration beer. For the first incarnation, De Molen head brewer Menno Oliver hopped in a muscle car and drove straight through from the Netherlands to Louisville, KY (thats USA folks) to brew this bourbon inspired ale, and we liked it so much, we decided to do it again. We took the ingredients in bourbon whiskey (Barley, Rye, Corn) and then smoked them with cherry wood and brewed a huge imperial stout with them. Then to top it off we aged it in Pappy VanWinkle Bourbon Barrels. The resulting beer is rich, smokey and complex, with a bourbon character of caramel, vanilla and spice. Bottle has orange reddish orange) wax top. Only the first version was aged in Pappy barrels. Bottle sharing w Multi Qlti. Piana ładnie zdobi szkło. W aromacie dominuje wędzonka, i to taka faktycznie owocowa. A może to czerwone owoce z utlenienia? Pewnie i to i to. W smaku mało słodkie, dalej mocno wędzone, dosłownie tylko nutka bourbonu. Alkohol dobrze ukryty.

EBF 2017. Theres a lot of flavor going on here. Its loaded with chocolate, sweet malts, and booze, making it a really viscous, flavor-rich imperial stout. However, the smoked malts were really apparent, too, giving it a bacon aroma that brought out a lot of "umami" in the final beer (I kinda hate myself for including that word in a beer review, but its honestly the only thing I could think). Really good, but meaty.

TAP. Black pour with solid coffee head.. Dark malt, warm boozyness mixed with sherry?.. Thick dark malt body, creamy texture, dark berries & boozy woody warmth.. Sourced against the grain.

UPDATED: FEB 3, 2017 2017 re-reate: 2016 version on tap at CYO for the AtG event. Pours a deep brown to black with a bit of creamy foam. Bacon, roasted cacao nib and light vanilla on the nose. Alcohol completely hidden. Light maple and cherry notes with more roasted cacao nib and smoke with light bourbon undertones. Smooth and rich with a silky finish. This is a stellar beer. 2014 bottle shared (2 years aged). Pours a oily black with very little carbonation. Thin bodied. Bakers chocolate, dark fruit light maple bacon. Vinous texture. Big smoked maple bacon and light prune. Smoke and roast cacao nib. The smoked is really well integrated with a classic De Molen feel that pairs well with the bourbon notes and cacao. Awesome stuff.

On tap at Hops & Pie. Brown/black appearance with a tan head. Aroma of smoked malt, roasted grain, chocolate, bourbon, oak and vanilla. Similar flavor, rich and complex with hints of caramel/toffee rounding things out. Medium to full body. Nicely done overall.

Bottle, graciously shared by a guest. Pours a pitch black beer with a bubbly tanned head. Aroma of coffee and bourbon, roast and some whisky malts. Flavor is bitterish, roasty and hints of darker chocolate. Has some slight hints of boozy notes in there, nothing disturbing. Fairly high carbonation, aftertaste is long and roasty sweet. Very nice

Pours black with a minimal beige head. Low carbonation. Aroma of vanilla, wood, bourbon and some notes of coffee. Lighter than expected in the palate, with strong malty backbone of roasted malts, some coffee, vanilla, caramel. Low sweetness, good but too hyped. Expected perfection here!

UPDATED: APR 21, 2017 0,75 bottle bought at the Bottle Shop Hong Kong.Appearance: Pours a deep dark brown colour with medium bubbly beige head.Aroma: Complex and rich aroma of roasted malt, caramel, vanilla, dark chocolate, toffee, dark berries and plums. In addition with bourbon, light burnt wood and oak aroma. Also with mild smokiness which is not overwhelming.Taste: Medium bittersweetness - mainly dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee beans, with some vanilla and plums . Some spice and perhaps liquorice at the end, with some smokiness and light, warming bourbon taste.Palate: Very creamy and silky texture with full body. Low to medium carbonation. The aftertaste is complex and long-lasting with roasted malt and dark chocolate, mixed with some mild sweet vanilla, spice and smokiness. The finish has some warming bourbon alcohol.Overall: A very well balanced and integrated smoked barrel-aged stout. Very mellow, rich and satisfying in all terms. ATG and de Molen do know how to brew an outstanding imperial stout. Wish there is more wonderful collaboration between different breweries. Give big credits to the design of the label as well.
