On tap @ The Drunk Monk, Mataro - Spain. Color: deep dark black beer with small carbonation and small ivory brown head. Smell: roasted malt, caramel and coffee complexity. Very rich nose, barrel notes. Chocolate and sweet finish. Taste: full body with roasted malt and coffee with chocolate domination. Mocha presence. Superb finish and quiet easy drinkable. Aftertaste: chocolate and coffee, barrel notes. Superb taste. koleminer20 (4172) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - FEB 12, 2016
From notes. 4-5 ish oz pour on draft at FoBAB on November 21. The pour is a muddier dark brown with a decent tan head that takes a little while to recede, leaving a light lace. The aroma is really sweet and milky up front. There is no denying the lactose here. The chocolate and heavy roast try to balance it out, but then there is a wet oak from the barrel that mind of messes that niceness up. It’s a little boozy, but I was hoping for a lot more balance with this. The flavor is equally as sweet up front. The chocolate and roast try to conceal the heavy alcohol before slowly letting it through. There is a little bit of a fruitiness that’s well received. The mouth feel is a little light, softly carbonated, but thin. The aftertaste is lingeringly sweet lactose and cocoa, to go along with a decent dose of barrel and bourbon. It wasn’t bad by any means, but I was hoping for a lot more here.
