Louisville roasted Heine Bros. Espresso was hot extracted pre-fermentation, and Mary Catherine’s Blend was cold extracted and added post-fermentation to give this beer an aggressive bitterness as well as a delicate yet pronounced coffee flavor and aroma. We started this imperial oatmeal stout with a massive amount of high quality Marris Otter malt and added an array of specialties including Oats, Roasted Barley, and very dark caramel Munich. Hefty additions of British hops early in the boil make for a powerful bitterness to balance the high malt sweetness. If your soul stays black even in the sun, this is the beer for you.

Draft sample May 2012. Pours a dark brown to black color with a small khaki head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malts, black coffee, espresso, chocolate with a sizable dose of bittering hops. Solid drinker, very enjoyable.

Draught at Lexington Beerworks. Big black pour with tons of coffee and chocolate. Bit of the tart berry that marks a big stout like this. ABV not dominant. Very nice.

On tap at local option. Pours a near clear very dark brown with a brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of coffee with backing dark grains, roasted malt and a hint of licorice. Flavor has coffe and roasted malts with a hint of underlying licorice.

On tap at Bad Apple. Pours near black with tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, good dose of coffee, and some chocolate. Flavors roasted malts, semi-sweet chocolate, and nice smooth coffee flavor. Mouthfeel was perfect for coffee stout. As far as coffee stouts go this was pretty damn good.

From a growler that turned up at Flossmoor’s pre-DLD party. I have got to visit this place next time we’re in Louisville. Holy a good way. This was seriously like a beer inspired espresso and not vice versa. I love coffee and this was awesome. Creamy, oily and bitter. Lovely.

Tap from source. Ash,chocolate and coffee malt aroma. Black color with small tan head. Mildly sweet chocolate and coffee malt flavor with a mildly bitter herbal hops finish. Incredibly smooth with no discernible alcohol. An easy drinking imperial stout - excellent.

Aroma of coffee, lightly acidic berries and chocolate. Appearance was black with mocha head. Flavor matched the nose; the berries were quite bright and pleasant, making this a unique imperial stout. Palate was oily and creamy. Excellent.
