COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Truly a ground breaking beer, this Barrel aged Rauchbier was an attempt to replicate the flavors present in Islay Scotch Whiskey. We used Munich malt as a base and added copious amounts of Beechwood and Peat smoked malt, which provides the intense smoky and earthy peat flavors found in Scotch. Then the addition of Alderwood smoked salt lends a crisp brininess that is reminiscent of the sea air in the Islay region of Scotland. Aged in used Angel’s Envy Bourbon Barrels to give an intense caramel, vanilla and whiskey flavor.

Draft at Jerry’s. Light amber with good, foamy, off-white head / Restrained, elegant nose of smoke, pine, and caramel / Light to medium body, dry, excellent balance and lightly bitter finish, alcohol well masked / Stylish flavors of smoked ham, orange, pine, and caramel / Not usually a fan of these, but this one is terrific.

Tap @ Cardinal. More than less a clear, deep golden body under a small, tan head. Strong and distinct aroma of smoke and peat without being too overwhelming. Flavor is quite sweet malt, smoke, peat, cured meat, dry sausage and light bourbon at the end. Fine balanced body and long lasting aftertaste. Surprisingly pleasant after a few sips after the first impression. A solid, and nice sipper.

Enjoyed at a share at Corbet’s house on July 10. 22 oz bottle. Enjoy is a great stretch here. Something happened to this beer. The pour is a darker orangey brown color with a light khaki colored head and a couple spots of lace as it almost fizzles away. The aroma is interesting. There is a light smokiness and then a heavy, heavy Band-Aid. This is just awful. And now the Band-Aid is the only detectable item. The flavor almost induces a gag reflex. It’s sharp, hot, smoky, and just full of Band-Aid. The mouth feel is crisp and has a bright carbonation with a lingering terrible aftertaste. Whoa. This is just bad. 4 3 2 2 8

[email protected], Copenhagen (11/02/2017) - amber pour with off white head. Toasted and smoked malty aroma and taste with notes of caramel, toffee, some charred and smoked notes, bourbon soaked wooden accents into the finish.

Fra fat på Mi2 Cardinal, mai-17: uklar gylden med flott skum som varer. Torvrøyk (men ikke så mye at det blir ubehagelig påtrengende), karamell og gule epler.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar; Stavanger. Orange to brown colour, small white head. Aroma of peat and beechwood smoked malts, also smoked salt (when you know it’s there). Medium dry flavour, distinct notes of said smoked ingredients. Hints of bourbon barrel in the finish. Not really my cup of tea, but drinkable.

nearbeer (5555) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - APR 24, 2017
650 ml. is a slow gusher. Hazy amber with a creamy film of foam. Aroma is smoked meat and caramel with a bit of citrus and bandage gauze. Flavors of apple brandy, peat smoke and a touch of Band-Aid. Medium-heavy body has medium-high, unsettling carbonation and shows a bit too much booze for 8.5%

tandembrauer (1557) - Stavanger, NORWAY - APR 1, 2017
UPDATED: MAY 8, 2017 On tap at Melkebaren, Sandnes. Pours hazy light amber with white head. Aroma of smoke, medicine, alcohol, bread, whisky, vanilla, caramel. Taste very sweet with smoked saltiness. Some alcoholic warmth.

hopscotch (11180) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - FEB 7, 2017
Draft... Pours clear and amber with copper highlights and a small, wispy, white head. All kinds of smokiness going on in the aroma - bacon and smoked Gouda are featured. Full-bodied with lazy carbonation. The flavor is bittersweet (slightly more bitter than sweet) and super smoky. Great stuff.
