The name of this beer style comes from the German word alt meaning old. This refers to the aging that alts undergo since they ferment more slowly and at colder temperatures than most ales. Slow fermentation helps condition the flavors in Alaskan Amber, contributing to its overall balance and smoothness.

UPDATED: JAN 4, 2005 Amber color (duh) with a nice malty and candy aroma. Decent tan head that didnt last too long though. Smooth, malty and bitter. Nicely done. Re-rated the head retention in a tulip glass and it did a bit better.

Medium-dark amber ale. Slightly toasted aroma with woody undertones. Wonderful, slightly sweet first impresion that turns to a warm, complex taste that is reminisicent of Newcastle, only much better. Slight hop finish that integrates well with the flavor profile and leaves a very smooth, wonderfully pleasant finish. One of my favorite beers.

Dark amber or rusty red with decent head, but it quickly subsided. Vague caramel tones on the nose; the flavor is similarly understated, caramel and lightly malted with a sweet finish. Disappointingly still.

Quickly disspating head, deep copper color. Nice malt, very slight bitterness. Really nothing great, but it is fairly balanced and the carbination level is good, but the head went down so fast...

Decent appearing beer, pours nice copper color with a rapidly diminishing off white head. Aroma is interesting. Smells malty and kinda aged. Flavor is nothing to write home about. Light malt sweetness on the front end. The finish is nice and spicy with some serious astringency.

This is one of those beers you have to try if you are in the northwest. One of the better off the shelf beers available in the Northwest.

Ack! Count me out on this one. Maybe it's because I had managed to drink some very good beers and it just clashed with them, but seemed cloyingly sweet. I left the pint in a bar with friends and wandered to another and back and not only was the pint still there, but the people at the table had all taken sips and said not one of them cared for it. Bland plus sweet does not make a beer for me. Tried it again in airport and thought the same.

UPDATED: JAN 31, 2004 Draft: Appealing amber color with an almost fruity aroma. Head was light and did not last long. Taste is smooth and sweet. A very drinkable beer. Goes GREAT with Buffalo wings or ribs. I hope to be able to find this quality beer in the lower 48! (I enjoyed this beer at TGI Friday's in Anchorage, AK)

UPDATED: FEB 29, 2004 So smooth... I wasn't a fan of the style til I tried Alaskan. Nice malty brew. Great mouthfeel. Love the taste although a bit on the sweet side. Sweetness gets to you on your third pint. Nice to drink in a hot tub.
