The name of this beer style comes from the German word “alt” meaning “old”. This refers to the aging that alts undergo since they ferment more slowly and at colder temperatures than most ales. Slow fermentation helps condition the flavors in Alaskan Amber, contributing to its overall balance and smoothness.

Bottle from Vons, Las Vegas. Pours hazy dark amber with a minimal, off-white head - some particles in it. The aroma contains malt, caramel, bread, fruits, hops, some nuts. It tastes medium sweet and very light bitter without becoming really hoppy. Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation. Agreeable.

Nice aroma of rich sweet malt, caramel and a hint of molasses. Nice deep orange brown red coloring with a huge tan head. Rich sweetness up front. Roasted malt... on the sweet side. Slightly smokey. Bitterness comes in nicely to balance. Medium mouthfeel, finish is mostly sweet but refreshing. Fresh sample makes the difference.

A good beer to be served on a jet while on my way to Portland, OR. Most airlines serve only crapweiser and the like. That said, I don’t anticipate ever myself buying this beer from a store.

12 oz. bottle. Poured dark amber with an off white head. Aroma was toasted malts, caramel, bread. Taste was bittersweet, malty, caramel, spice, grain.

Deep Ruby color with off white head. Aroma with rustic bread, caramel malt, muted sweet herbal notes. Taste is sweet but smooth, not overly cloying. Medium body, a little sticky.

Bottle from a grocery store in Bridgeport, California. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel, toffee, with a touch of dried fruits and nuts. Flavour is sweet and light bitter. Body is medium. A bit on the sweet side, but not bad.

Sixer from Jungle Jims; drink by date of 7/9/17. Aroma: Moderate caramel apple with some additional sweetener... candi sugar? Nothing aroma-wise suggestive of hops. Appearance: Transparent copper pour with soft carbonation holding up a foamy tan head that sticks around admirably. Flavor: Strongly sweet toffee/caramel apple with very little to eventually dry things up; the finish lingers with unresolved sweetness. Palate: Medium body, sticky texture, soft carbonation, long finish. Overall: I dont enjoy knocking a classic, but this is pretty much a perfect example of a beer that a) Enjoyed success at the inception of craft beer because it actually has flavor, but b) Has long since been surpassed to the point of obsolescence. Im sure they still sell lots of this and are probably unconcerned about my minority opinion, but this really is an old dog. With these criticisms, its not awful with a grilled burger, but is almost unbearably sweet without some balancing savoury dish as an accompaniment.

First tried on Alaskan Cruise. Typical amber altbier color. Aroma/Taste: Roasted malt, light hops and chestnut.

Originally rated on 1/20/2009. A nice amber body with ample carbonation, good lace left on my glass. Flavor was caramel malts with a hint of nuts, slightly sweet finish. Crisp carbonation bite, with not much aftertaste. My first alt beer was pretty decent.

agent_persik (796) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - APR 21, 2017
Clean dark amber colour, small white head. Aroma of caramel, malt, grain, toffee, honey. Sweet lightly dry taste, subtle bitterness in finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Very nice.
