Very dark brown pour with a long lasting two-finger foamy light tan head. Aroma is pine and citrus hops with a bit of light roasted malt. Taste contains a bit more of the lightly roasted malts than the nose, but the hops are still predominant. As it warms, the light malt sweetness on the finish is more noticeable. Moderate carbonation but fairly light mouthfeel. Pretty nice balance here and a very solid offering from Alaskan.
12oz bottle pours with a good dark brown head... nice lacing... the brew is clear, but is still very dark brown only showing hints of garnet at the stem end of my wine glass.
Aromas are well rounded.. good blend of roasty malts and citrus hops.. dark cocoa comes with some warmth...
Flavor is nice... cocoa and slight roast maltiness with no real astringency... citrus is a bit light, but it helps the overall brew... this is well balanced and well done... a slight sweetness adds to the overall brew adding to the body and helps bring out the hop and malt flavors. kyzr (1526) - Montana, USA - MAR 26, 2016
Dark cola pour with decent brown head. Nose is roasted malt and grassy hops. Flavor is much the same, with a herb finish. (Old notes) lownote (585) - Austin, Alabama, USA - APR 10, 2015
Light roasted aroma. Pours black with with a tan tiny head. Taste is a pretty generic hop flavor. Thick mouth and light carb. Not very interesting. slowrunner77 (11911) - Reno, Nevada, USA - SEP 26, 2014
acheives a nice complexity of chocolate and roasted malts and a healthy dose of citrus in the nose and flavor. light, but more bitter in the aftertaste than expected. a sessionable, but flavorful black ipa...and better IMO than their double black ipa that was more for one bottle than this one was for a six-pack lb4lb (2587) - Austin, Texas, USA - JUL 3, 2014
Light black. Smell is hoppy roast cardboard malt. Overly sweet. Taste is a bit better. More balanced. Slightly cardboardy. Good I hate this style

I was excited to try this as I enjoyed the Black IPA from their Pilot Series last year. The beer is a nice black with red hues and a nice tan foam presence. Smells like a sweet porter mixed with grassy and resiny hops, maybe the slightest hint of peppery notes. The flavor follows through with a nice and complimentary style of east meets west kinda fusion. I dig the flavor profile in that neither the malts nor the hops dominate this one - it’s well balanced in a classy and appropriate fashion. The mouthfeel is relatively full with some fine and soft carbonation. I like the beer, I like many of AK’s beers and I’m happy to have this in the spring lineup. I’d drink this all night - easy and smooth.

Bottle. Dark brown color with tan head. Pine, floral, dry chocolate aromas. medium body, average carbonation. Dry black malt, dark chocolate flavors with some bitter pine hoppage; dry light ash finish--not bad
