COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Much of the history of Hopothermia is lost to the mists of time. We know that the windswept lone brewer dreamt of a Double IPA so bold and packed full of hop flavor that it could keep the wild wolves from the door of his remote cabin. We know he was able to converse with the creatures of the woods—except for the bears who slept through the cold winter, and the mink, who were just really super rude. And we know he skillfully crafted a beer that became the stuff of legend.

There are strange brews made where glaciers cascade
By the brewers who know no bounds.
For they stuff in the hops ’til the temperature drops
And then call for a few more rounds.
In Alaska, it seems, every brewer dreams
of a bold Double IPA.
Hopothermia’s the beer, in the Last Frontier
That will keep the wild wolves at bay.

Bottle from Downtown Spirits, Seattle
Beautiful amber color, bright and clean, with medium sized compact head. Mild aroma of resiny hops and caramelly malt. Good body strength; the flavor is essentially based o malt and caramel, with a touch of cereals; it’s lean, with just a bit of sweetness, so it doesn’t get cloying; the hops are not very bright, but they still carry a good degree of bitterness and some hop resins; bitter orange peel in the final.
Not vibrant, but a solid brew.

Bottles at the hotel room in San Diego. Clear golden beer with a rich offwhite head. Hoppy grassy flavor, caramel, peach, cream notes, some pine. A bit too malty for me.

UPDATED: SEP 22, 2014 re-rate at the brewery. Amber, full head. Aroma is full and fruity with orange and melon. Sweet up front, orangey, fruity character. Sweetish finish with a bit of fruity deliciousness.

On tap at Chuck’s 85th St. Market, pours a hazy copper orange with a small beige head. Aroma of rich resinous hops, tropical fruitiness and a big caramel malt backbone. Flavour is similar, with loads of fruity, resinous hops and a whopping caramel malt backbone. Well-balanced, with a big malt backing to go with the high hops. Great stuff, but a tad sweet due to the big malt backbone.

On tap @ Slater’s 50/50 Anaheim. Light amber/dark orange pour with white foam. Kind of a sticky caramel aroma to this. Lots of pine and resin, sort of herbal as well. There’s some orange zest and pith, too. Flavor is fairly bitter and resinous. Very pine forward. Sticky brown sugar and caramel sweetness. Maybe a bit of booze. Not my favorite.

Tap at Capital Beerfest 2013. Pours amber with an off-white head. Laid back citrus hop aroma. Med body. Flavor is light pitted fruit with a good dose of citrus. Finishes pretty dry and very hoppy.

Bottle - Orange, caramel and boozy heat. Clear gold with a decent beige head. Lots of orange and a bit of medicinal and herbal notes. A bit boozy and just not that great. Huge miss.

Bottle sample at Beer & Beyond. Clear golden-orange. Aroma has kinda stale fruity hops and some malt. Flavor has sweetish malt, citric and piney hops, slightly stale, and nice bitterness. Medium-bodied.
