COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alaskan Barley Wine has been produced in limited edition vintages each year since its introduction in 2003. A big beer for big winters, this brew has garnered a steady following in Alaska. Bottled for the first time in 2007, the balanced flavor collaboration between hops, malt and high alcohol showcases the barley wine style, winning first place at the 2007 Toronado Barley Wine Festival and bronze at the 2008 World Beer Cup.

Bottle 2007 sample shared by shigadeyo. Poured clear reddish brown copper color with a moderate frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate dark fruit, earthy and small caramel malt aroma. Medium to full body with a dry smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate to heavy dark fruit sweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a complex standout beer.

Drake (13737) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 6, 2011
22 ounce bottle, 2008 vintage, courtesy of kramer quite some time ago. Lemme see... I’ve had this since July 2009 myself. Pours a clear dark brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of toffee, caramel, earthy hops and berry-like fruits. The taste is toffee, bitter hops, caramel. Medium-full bodied. Nice barleywine.

Christian (13670) - Odense, DENMARK - AUG 23, 2009
Red brown with a lasting off-white head. Aroma is fruity with lots of vineous alcohol. Sweet and fruity flavour with caramel malt. I found it rather simple, although well brewed.

BeerandBlues2 (13321) - Escondido, California, USA - MAY 23, 2008
22-oz bottle, 2007 vintage. Pours dark brown with a thin, fizzy, light brown head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is average malt (cookie, bread, caramel), heavy hops (perfume, flowers), average yeast (earth, leaves) with notes of dates, alcohol, and cola. Full bodied, alcoholic texture, average carbonation, and a spicy-bitter finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness, acidity, and bitterness; ends with a spicy alcohol bite.

(22oz bottle, 2008 vintage, courtesy of blutt59) Pours an amber body with a small off-white head. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, light chocolate, toffee, and fruit. Flavor of caramel malt, raisins, citrus, brown sugar, and toffee. Too hot. Needs some time to age.

Dogbrick (13012) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - DEC 14, 2011
This brew pours a deep brownish-amber color with a medium foamy light beige head that diminishes slowly. Sticky rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark malt, overripe fruit and hops. Rich body with flavors of toasted malt, dark fruit, hops and toffee. The finish is full and malty with a lingering toasted bread and fruit aftertaste. Solid Barley Wine from start to finish.

crossovert (12934) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 30, 2011
650ml bottle. 2011 Vintage. It pours a deep mahogany with reddish/purple notes. The head is fluffy and off white and takes a while to recede. The smell is great. You can tell it is an assertively hopped northwestern-style barleywine. The hops have a definite citrusy vibe and seamlessly blend into the sugary scented malt bill. There is also a hint of banana which is odd but it works. The flavor is big on the sweetness. It also seems yeastier than the average barleywine. Nice alcoholic punch but not too much, slight bitterness which is sad after smelling the aroma but it still is a nice barleywine.

hopdog (12549) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 23, 2008
Ratebeer rating #3,900. 22oz bottle, 2007 Vintage. Poured a deep and muddy mahogany color wtih an averaged sized tan head. Aromas of pine, citrus rinds, caramel, dark fruits, and a little earthy. Tastes of caramel, dark fruits, lighter earthiness, wood, toffee, and citrus. Sticky. Has a nice balance. Light to medium alcohol in the finish. I’m glad I have a few bottles to test out through the next few years!
