3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours to a vibrant golden body with no carbonation but a nice white head. The aroma is very much Saaz but faded quickly. It doesn’t smell bad, just after awhile, it doesn’t really smell. There’s notes of spruce in there, but predominately a nice crisp Saaz. Ok, that’s a very unexpected flavor. It’s like green tea, flowers, and grape jelly. There’s also a deep rounded malt in there. Very well balanced malt profile. Kinda like caramelized bread dough with light vanilla. This was a very unique beer and very unexpected. If I’m ever looking for something distinct to fill my belly, this would be a good alternative to other beer. Smooth palate.
UPDATED: JAN 12, 2018 Aroma of candied fruits and some sweet caramel. Pale amber color with a thin head. Sweet syrup up front with some plum and dark fruit notes. Bitterness is mild and flat. Slightly watery. Average. lees_29 (47) - - DEC 31, 2017
Winter comes early in Alaska, so we release Alaskan Winter Ale in October. The tender new growth of spruce trees has been used for brewing in Alaska since the late 1700s when explorers sailed the coast of Alaska looking for the Northwest Passage. Alaskan Brewing revives this tradition, adding spruce tips to its Alaskan Winter Ale. Blueberry beer. Not a fan.

Bottle in Seattle. Sweet fruit and caramel muddle on nose. Quite sweet, almost cloying, body. Oily and smooth, clean fruity spruce with winter spiced caramel. Light fruity hop, low bitterness. Some nutmeg, banana ester, fizzy finish. Spruce adds lots of sweetness here, needs something to offset. JStax (7396) - Devola/Marietta, Ohio, USA - DEC 10, 2017

Unusual – spruce tips? Nice winter brew. Aroma is strong sweet tropical fruit, some toasted caramel malt, a little woodsy. Color is light copper amber. Taste mirrors the aroma, sweet with a slightly drier finish. Palate is medium bodied. Overall – very aromatic; a sweet leaning amber – brown ale; only place I can identify the spruce tips is the finish. I was expecting a drier, more resiny/piney brew. The closer to room temp this gets, the more the spruce comes out. teamsale (317) - Washington, USA - NOV 22, 2017
Bottle pours a clear copper with a thin sand head and minimal lacing. Aroma is tangy, malt, bread. Taste is rich and heavy with a caramel malt flavor. Bitterness is fairly tame and the aftertaste is full and pleasant. PubReports7 () - - NOV 19, 2017
An ale I like beyond its merits: the spruce tips make it taste the way Christmas trees smell. Bill Becker (2055) - Casper, Wyoming, USA - OCT 16, 2017
From Nov 2005
Poured from the bottle(room temp) a deep gold with very small head that dissipated almost immediately.
Smell is a weak wiff of malt and some fruit.
The taste is nicely sweet malt with a tinge of bitterness that must be the spruce tips but the faint fruit aroma doesn't, for me, show up in the taste at all. This winter ale lacks complexity but is certainly very drinkeable. Pretty good stuff.
PS: I also had this on tap yesterday and my overall impression of *it* was that it was slightly more "intense" on all counts and would score a slightly higher score. ;^) Kcraig (1) - - SEP 4, 2017 does not count
