GoldRush is a recent American apple from Purdue University, named for its color and the rush of flavor it offers. That flavor is rich, complex and vinous. Its tart acidity, balanced with a spicy sweetness, makes it highly prized for cider. This fourth single varietal from Albemarle CiderWorks is dry and crisp with citrus overtones hinting of grapefruit. Its tartness on the tongue is smoothed by notes of honey and ginger. This is an elegantly dry cider that pairs wonderfully with a variety of foods-chicken cordon bleu, trout, Gruyere, Manchego- or on its own.

Apple, pear nose. Clear very pale yellow. Semi-sweet, tart apple. Light body, easy carbonation. Clean, fresh, crisp.

From a tasting flight at Albemarle CiderWorks. Poured a clear, very pale, almost clear yellow color with no head at all. Light apple, can’t really smell too much of the ginger. Light bitter grapefruit notes, but pretty subtle. Ginger isn’t really notciable either, I wouldn’t have guessed without knowing. I’d bump up both by perhaps by actually adding additions of ginger to it, which would help differentiate their ciders a bit more.

Bottle at the source. Dry and bittersweet. More bitter than sweet. Slight ginger as you swallow.

Bottle @ Alienable Ciderworks. Clear pale. Dry and tart aroma with a hint of basement. Nice tart crispness with a little sour hint. A tad aggressive in the body.

Very clear, pale straw color. Aroma is apple and faint lemons and tangerine. Tart apple flavor moves into a very faintly smoky and spiced ginger finish. Like a whisper of phenol. Wouldn’t have pegged this at 10% in a million years. Enjoyable stuff, paired it with a pepper jelly glazed roasted chicken and herb spelt bread. Nice, best cider I’ve had in a bit.

750 mL bottle from Beer Run. Pours a clear pale golden color. Aroma of tart apples with sweet floral notes, mild tannins, faint bits of vanilla. The taste is tart apples, vanilla, tart berries. Medium bodied, peppery booze, slightly hot.

Bottle from Beer Run. The pour’s almost clear. Very light gold with no head whatsoever. Active carb rising from the bottom of the glass. The nose is honeyed apple and pear. Light citrus, musty grape, countryside earthiness. Super dry, sweet flavors. Nice earthy spice, wood, manure. More citrus. Very tart on the bone dry finish. Light body, not a hint of the chunky ABV. Active carbonation. Overall, pretty good actually. I’m not much of a cider drinker, but this is certainly tasty.
