1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
Received as an extra in a box. Pours a cloudy orange in color with a quarter finger worth of white head. Nose is predominately the curacao orange peel with some light belgian yeast. Very peculiar nose for a saison. Tastes disgusting, it tastes of stale hops, dish soap, belgian yeast...it’s extremely offensive and I am struggling putting down each sip. Moderate mouthfeel, moderate carbonation, slightly slick, and a moderate finish. Was excited to try something else from Alchemist, this missed the mark quite a bit. I think I will take my time exploring the rest of their catalogue.
Poured into a tulip, the appearance was a hazy burnt orange almost amber color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that slid off faintly.
The aroma had some hay, grassy dryness, slight skunkiness, light clove, some bubblegum, and some white pepper.
The flavor took the previously mentioned aromas to blend together gently. Slight aftertaste of hay and grassy dryness. Light earthy/grassy finish.
The feel was about light bodied, maybe a touch above. Great sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt appropriate.
Overall, well, it is gluten free and honestly, if I was a celiac, I wouldn’t mind having to drink this one. I know "gluten-free" beers aren’t a true accepted style by ratebeer or even BJCP but hey, with this one, I say who cares, drink up and be happy. Bottle as Ipswich Celia. Chillhazy yellow color, dense white head. Light grassy aroma. Taste is sour herbs, bitter peppery finish. tapefuzz (767) - Massachusetts, USA - AUG 26, 2016
[Notes from August 2012] 12oz bottle. Pours a hazy orange with a foamy off-white head. Aroma is off citrus and yeast. Taste is excessively yeasty with indistinct and overly sweet citrus. Finishes with an unpleasantly peppery taste. Yeast taste refuses to dissipate. Oily, too-heavy mouthfeel worsened by being excessively carbonated. Bottle poured into tulip glass..hazy yellow pour with thin white head..aroma of bread, coriander, pepper..dry,earthy taste..not bad mkgrenwel (621) - North Shore, Massachusetts, USA - MAR 11, 2014
Orange pour with little head. Aroma is citrus, pepper and yeast. Flavor is quite estery. Tons of pepper in the finish. Overly spiced. Palate is a little thick. Not exactly refreshing. Can be a bit overwhelming to try to drink more than one. Malt character is unsurprisingly strange. If I were stuck gluten free I'd grab this every once in a while, but it's not something I want regularly.
