12 ounce bottle from Badger Spirits in Beloit, WI, served at cellar temp or so from a Unibroue glass. Translucent bronze with a long-lasting off-white creamy head, leaving a touch of lace...caramel malts, red wine, and a touch of thyme in the fairly forward aroma...body is faintly sour, vinous, with those caramel malt characteristics coming in fairly late in the game, after we’re already in trouble with a bit too much tartness and red wine notes...full bodied enough I guess, low to moderate carbonation, but this is closer to a Belgian Dubbel (and not a great one) than a Scotch Ale to my palate, and there’s a bit of vegetal character that shows up and doesn’t go away. Ultimately very problematic; I’ve had some better bottles before in my non-rating days, but they weren’t *THAT* great; unless I get a chance to have this on tap I’m afraid I’m done with this beer, and I’m increasingly wary of this brewery. edgallow (4211) - nashville, Tennessee, USA - JUL 15, 2016

Bottle. Medium amber brownish pour with tan head, decent retention and lace. Nose is pretty much malt, some nutty and caramel notes, but not much more than basically malt. Mouth is malt forward and pretty much malt throughout, with an annoying umamate clingy bitterness to lend more lackluster boxes for me to tick. I love me some wee heavy... but this one is shit (or, as my Scots forbearers would say, it’s fookin shite).

I don’t recall how I got this, but it was probably someone from Wisconsin. Caramel malts and dark fruits dominate the aroma. Seems to be lacking any peaty notes in the aroma, but shows up in the flavor. Raisin-y, dried cherries, with medium sweetness and a molasses-like bitterness. Draft at the brewpub. Dark, muddy brown. Delivers a rich malt character in an unassuming manner. Nothing quite stands out, other than very decisive richness and body. Otherwise it hides its 7.2 very well, a great malt bomb. (#5114, 7/2/2013)
