Originally brewed in 2005 as the first in our annual Decadence series, AleSmith Olde Ale follows the tradition of classic British-style Old Ales. This rich, malt-forward ale showcases soft notes of currants and dried fruit along with complex dark sugars, all of which are balanced by a subtle bitterness derived from the addition of traditional English hops. AleSmith Olde Ale is ready to be enjoyed now or it can be aged upwards of twenty years to further enhance its amazing depth of flavor. A hearty ale designed to please Bacchus himself!

UPDATED: AUG 18, 2015 2005 Bottle aged approximately one year.
Raw, fresh and messy in the nose, it certainly has that unpasteurized, unfiltered feel to it that is so appealing about alesmith. Unfortunately, the hops are decidedly obnoxious and burst forth with cherry, lychee, grapefruit and orange peel notes, dominating the aroma and limiting the malt presence to a sugary chocolate-meets-caramelized raisin. The flavor, then, is not surprisingly heavy on the hops and Im amazed at how bitter and bold they are after a year in the bottle. Oranges and ruby red grapefruit dominate the opening, with a wash of toffee in the middle that is in turn enveloped by staunch bitterness and alcohol on the end. Low carbonation, and fat malts lead to a typical hop lovers mess but as usual, I dont approve. Would be more interested to try a bottle with 3 years of age on it now. Interesting, anyways, and wholesome, but too messy for me.
2010 Decadence bottle drunk 8/14/15.
Well, the hops certainly weren’t a problem this time and as far as old ales go, it does have some enjoyable malt flavors of toffee, caramel, plums, raisins, vanilla and the alcohol somewhat dries it out. But in the end, the oxidation, combined with just too much booze and soggy-sweet flavors just dosent have any appeal for me whatsoever. Scored the same, but for different reasons.

750ml bottle - shared by Sten - thanks! (7:4:7:4:14=3.6)
Sweet aroma, malty and a bit savoury, dark dried fruit, some liquoricey spicing (Anna gets a touch of cinnamon sticks too). Sweet malty taste, some black treacle. Full palate, smooth stickiness, gentle carbonation. Really malty, some date or plum fruitiness, but rather sweet. Slightly rubbery liquorice finish. Hilariously American brew, given the commercial description, at least that made me laugh. That’s not supposed to sound negative, this is a good’un. Does a reasonable job of keeping the alcohol in check - clearly a hefty brew, but not getting actual booze here, then again the sugars are dominant.

Bottle at tasting. Aroma of sweet raisin, caramel and ripe fruit. Taste has raisin, caramel, bitter resinous hop, booze, ripe fruit and a boozy finish. Solid.

Medium/heavy aroma of malts, caramel, dried fruit, dark fruit, chocolate, nuts and roasted malts.

Opaque red/brown beer with heavy yeast and with a slight/medium beige head.

Starts medium/heavy sweet with malts, caramel, dried fruit, dark fruit and chocolate; ends slightly bitter and dry with nuts and roasted malts.

This beer is intense, complex and balanced. Amazing complex flavour, full of sweet malt flavours and a decent amount of roasted malts too. Lovely dry nuts in the finish as well. So much perfect fruit of all kinds in the flavour. Perfect appearance and a great palate as well.

Sampled in a glass poured from a bottle, this ale had a dark brown murky pour and gave a light tan colored lasting head of bubbles that had a yellow tint to them, there was nice spots and small fingers of lacing on the glass, the nose was malty and had aromas of caramel, a little dark fruit that resembled raisin and fig, some alcohol esters, faint earth notes, caramel candy and dark sugar sweetness, the flavors were malty, intense toasted malt with caramel and a little toffee, and toasted sweet bread, the finish had a light alcohol bitterness with malt and sweetness following, the mouth feel was pretty full and layered the tongue, it was a little creamy and had soft to average carbonation, faint warmth with each sip, the nose was very malty, lots of caramel and caramel like notes, toffee and faint dark fruit, the flavor was similar with a light alcohol bitterness and warmth on the mouth, this beer would be a good sipper on a cold evening.

Złożone i świetne piwo.

0.75l bottle shared with The Tasting Crew. This is a cloudy looking darker reddish one. A nice big off-white head on the top, quickly fading but leaving lots of lacings on the sides of the glass. Smells really good. Fruity, dark berries, raisins, somewhat sugary. Not too sweet though. Mild needles. Å lovely aroma indeed. Tastes lovely also. It’s thick syrupy and oily in the mouth, soft prickling on the carbonation. Vinous in the taste. Oak woody, sweet red sticky berries. A little sharp alcohol. So complex and balanced. A lovely tasting old ale. Would not mind a revisit on this one. 18.07.2015

Corpo pieno, mediamente carbonata.
