Alesmith Decadence Anniversary Ale was originally brewed in 2005 to celebrate our first decade in business. Our brewers had such a great time concocting Alesmith Decadence that they decided to make it an annual event, and brew a new style each year to commemorate our anniversary. Alesmith Decadence 2011 is a Maple Smoked Barley wine. Blending elements of two beer styles, smoke beer and barley-wine. Alesmith has created a unique, homebrew-inspired beer. Big and malty, with a huge Bamberg smoked-malt character, Alesmith Decadence 2011 has another very special ingredient: Vermont maple syrup. The smoky malt flavor is perfectly balanced by modest bittering hop additions. A rich, full-bodied beer designed to deliver a memorable drinking experience. Join our anniversary celebration with Alesmith Decadence. You’ll soon discover why Alesmith is known around the world as the place to find legendary craftsmanship.

750 mL on my balcony with Ryan, Eddie, and John, courtesy of Armin. Thanks man! Poured a hazy copper with an off-white head. Smell is bacon, maple, toffee, smoke, BBQ, and syrup. Taste is toffee, light banana, a hint  of smoke, rauchy, caramel, maple syrup, and clove with a medium bitter finish. Mouthfeel is medium with medium carbonation.  Much more smoky in the aroma than in the taste, pretty decent and suprising barleywine.

Pours a rich dark brown color with a thin off-white head. Aromas of sweet sugary malts, brown sugar, earthy and herbal hops, and a hint of woodiness. Flavors were amazingly rich and complex, yet balanced. Elements of woody smokiness, tobacco, dried dates and figs were present along with the sweet rich dark malts. Lots of bitterness, but balanced by the soft and gentle sweetness. Very slick mouthfeel, but astringent finish. Overall a very big and complex beer.

750 from Wegman’s. Pours turbid ruby/Carolina mud colored with fizzy off-tan head. Nose is rauchy caramel malt, hops, fruit. Tastes very rauchy, somewhat sweet and caramel malty, with mapel syrup, mild hops and vinous fruit notes late. Decent, but falls a bit short as either a barleywine or a smoked beer.

750ml bottle pours a hazy, caramel orange with some cloudy white head. Nose is salty, smokey, maple, sugar. Smells like faux turkey bacon. Flavor is similar, kind of bleck, sweet, sugary, a little salty, smokey. Weird. Full bodied.

Bottle from Sunset Beer Co. Nose is malt and light smoke. Flavor is again light smoke on top of a classic barleywine. Not finding much maple. Looking forward to seeing where this is at in a year or so. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Thanks to ibrew2or3 for the share! Cheers, Dave! Pours a deep mahogany with red highlights. Nose is caramel, smoke, light campfire, some earthy maple syrup, and a hint of spice. Flavor is sweet malt that quickly goes to smoke, maple, and earth and fades into smokey and boozy maple in the finish. Full in body and an odd duck overall. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750mL bottle. Pours a clear amber color with a thin tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of toffee, smoke, toasted malts, herbal notes and some spiciness. The taste is toffee, smoke, caramel, raisin and bitter hops. Medium-full bodied. Quite nice.

750 ml bottle from Barrons (Point Loma) - Pours a hazy brown color with a medium size light tan head. Nice thick lacing. Aroma is nice and smoky. Flavor is sweet smoke and esters. The smoke and alcohol linger in the finish. Medium to full body. This beer is drinking pretty good right now.

Served in a mini snifter. Pours a moderate brown color with a moderate off-white head that recedes fairly quickly. The nose brings a moderate dosage of smoke alongside just a touch of maple and some caramel and bread sweetness. Flavor has smoke again, and it is a bit overbalanced toward this. Malt in the background. Hints of maple. Body is medium and rich with quite a bit of sweetness. Interesting, though not something I’d necessarily want to come back to.

Clear reddish brown with a medium off white head. Caramel and dark sugar vinousness with hints of peet. Uber sweet caramel and angelfood cake with smokey brown sugar in the finish.
