March 15th, 2012 - Alesmith shines as a good deed in a weary world. That world is San Diego, and it is weary because the mana we sustain ourselves is the lighter, hoppier beers. Not all of us were raised at the teat of the hop cone, however, and crave something darker and broodier for our evening sustenance. Alesmith features its own hoppy beers, true, but you can tell that the real love and devotion appears in their abysmally dark, sweet, sticky beers. The Wee Heavy has been a hallmark and testament to Alesmith’s ability to forge a balanced, boozy brew. The English version of the wee heavy, a Scottish style ironically peppered with an Anglo-saxon microbe, is a small variation on the classic, but enough to be different, distinct and still amazing. The familiar flavors are there in both the nose and the palate: dark, sweet with caramel, malts and apples and lots of booze. But the English yeast brings a ribbon of toffee to the decadent blend - a distinct sweetness which, like Nutella, plays well with others. It’s delicious, and I hesitate to take notes for fear of losing hold of the moment and forgetting just how good dark brews can be, even in this foreign land in Southern California. I enjoyed this gem at Alesmith’s tasting room, and it was listed up on the chalkboard, indicating it was a temporary beer - a treat for a moment, and then gone. It’s superb quality fits with the Japanese obsession with bursts of life changing exquisiteness, and then evaporation. If that is the case with Alesmith’s English Wee Heavy, so be it. I’ll appreciate the beer all the more in its absence. If not, I could see this being a common guest in my growler. aleph (231) - - APR 20, 2012

On tap at brewery. Thin black pour with disappearing tan head. Nose is super rich and sweet. Raisins, vanilla, and fresh bread. Taste has more bite/sharpness than nose. Bit of tart malty sweetness. Nondescript mid sweetness. Enjoyable.

Phone rate. Tap at Alesmith. Wow, loads different. Hazy dark brown with a thin beige ring. Nothing rouses after agitation. Fruity nose dominates with solid toasty nutty chocolate behind. Flavor is much the same. I feel like the fruity yeast is adding to the perceived sweetness here, and is just getting to be a bit much, and I’ve just got a taster (since that’s all they’re doing. Semi-dry, bitterness at a 2, light alcohol. Big body with a slight tingle of carbonation. I appreciate the variation, but I was not a fan. On tap at AleSmith. Dark brown and slightly viscous with a small tan head leaving a ring. Very nice aroma, malty with some roastiness, peat smoke, and toffee. Really good flavor, with a great complex malt base, chocolate, toffee, peat, and caramel. Really tasty. Medium-plus bodied with carbonation on the lower end. Very smooth and slick on the palate. On tap. Sampled next to the standard version (which I slightly prefer, but that is my favorite high octane Wee Heavy by a mile, so that is high praise for this version). What a difference the yeast can make going with English over 001. Pours with a very deep brown body with a tan head. Aromas are quite a bit different than the original (possibly better). Huge grainy, rich malt, cereal aromas. Brown sugar, mild esters, some caramelization. Flavors are not quite as good as the original. A bit of a harsher flavor and quite a bit fruitier (estery) than the cleaner normal version. Grainy, molasses, burnt caramel and a light bitterness. Medium bubbles, rich and thick. Tasty. On tap at Alesmith with Andy, James and Dallas for Dallas’ bachelor weekend. Black pour with caramel-colored head. Aroma is disappointingly malty and of rice. Mouthfeel is creamy and there is a sweet aftertaste. Moderately bitter palate. Not impressive relative to their other great samplings, but this was not bad.
