Bottle conditioned.
Caramel and toffee notes abound in this deep copper-colored American Barleywine-style ale alongside toasted malt and a hint of ripe dark fruits. Old Numbskull showcases malt sweetness, intense American hops, and an aggressive bitterness. Extremely well-balanced, the full-bodied mouthfeel and assertive hop profile leads into a deceptively smooth finish. Old Numbskull can be enjoyed now or laid down for years to come.

750 ml bottle into snifter; no bottle dating, but was purchased in late 2011. Pours hazy deep ruby red color with a small dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lasts. Light soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, raisin, apple, orange zest, floral, brown sugar, pine, molasses, toast, orange rind, brown bread, and floral earthiness. Damn nice aromas good balance and complexity of dark malt and fruity/earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big caramel, toffee, orange zest, apple, toast, floral, pine, orange rind, brown sugar, brown bread, chocolate, light roast, and floral earthiness. Fair amount of floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, orange zest, orange rind, light fruits, toast, light chocolate, brown bread, brown sugar, floral, pine, light roast, and floral earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic balance and complexity of deep malt and hop flavors; with a nice bitterness/sweetness balance, and hardly any cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and very full bodied with a creamy, slick, and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic well aged barleywine. Fantastic complexity and balance of deep malt and hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.

Brown and slight orange tinge with a very dense thin tan head. Smell is incredible, lots of resinous hop oiils and dark fruitiness, cigar, a deep caramel roast malt. Flavour is huge, tons of caramel malt sweetness, packed with hop oiliness, end of having a slight bitter aftertaste. Hops are very earthy and rich, very full bodied and warming. Incredibly decadent, wonderful beer!

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2016 Home. Hazy dark amber with white head. Big sweet roasted barley and light caramel. Dry and bitter medicinal and bandaids, rubberbands. Somewhere hoppy. Medium sweet, quite bitter for the style. Medium body. Soft carbonation. Its like Wolfenstein 2D. Update the next day: my skull is numb af.

Bottle shared thanks to Mrk. Clear dark amber with quite big beige head. Caramel, strong grass and lime peel, burning alcohol, toffee, raisins, some red wine, light wood and bitter herbs. Medium sweet and strong herbal and alcoholic. Full bodied. Very bitter and alcoholic.

Pours ruby with deep amber shades and a frothy beige/khaki head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, hops (somehow earthy), pine needles, honey, some dark fruits like raisins and dried plums. The flavour is awesome: tons of caramel malts up front, brown sugar, honey, dark fruits and in the end the hops come and clean the mouth leaving it dry and bitter. Superbly balanced. Medium to full body, almost oily texture. The best barley wine so far, together with Mikkellers Big Worse.

13ish years old bottle. Hazy brown, low head. Somewhat oxidized, but still nice enough notes - Prune malty, chocolate, roast, a hint estery play. Full thick on the palate, light minerally on the tongue.

Approx 2003-2004, thanks Jonas. Murky brown with not much of a head. Aroma is smooth milk chocolate (not too sweet) clove, slight roast. Taste is brown sugar sweetness with roasty phenolic bitterness. Intensely smooth and well rounded, not too much carbonation. Heavy and oily but still somehow drinkable, so smooth. Not bad at all. I love it!

On tap at Bloodhound Bar, Brisbane. Pours with nice copper hue and thin head but good lacing. Malty aroma mixed with earthy hops leading to rich taste profile from beginning to end. Malt sweetness eventually catches up to hop bitterness at the finish, overall an awesome brew.
