Speedway Stouts ominous, pitch-black appearance has become a hallmark of this modern-day classic. Chocolate and roasted malts dominate the flavor, supported by notes of dark fruit, toffee, and caramel. A healthy dose of locally-roasted coffee from Ryan Bros. Coffee, Inc. added to each batch brings out the beers dark chocolate flavors and enhances its drinkability. Despite its intensity, Speedway Stouts fine carbonation and creamy mouthfeel make it very smooth and surprisingly easy to drink. This beer ages very well and will continue to mature for many years to come.

UPDATED: JUL 6, 2013 Rating #420! Pours a jet black with a HUGE tan head that takes forever to dissipate. After opening and smelling the booziness of this beer I am maybe regretting trying to finish this 750ml myself. Definitely coffee and alcohol in the nose. The taste is amazing. I was expecting your typical harsh imperial stout taste but there is none of that. Just smooth coffee and malt flavor. Oh my this is smooth and dangerous. The mouth feel isn’t as thick as I would have expected but it doesn’t matter. The beer rolls around in your mouth like butter. Wow this is great! I can’t wait to taste my other bottles in a few months.

On tap at the brewery and a 750ml bottle later. Both were very similar. Aroma is that of roasted malt, coffee, with a slight hint of coconut. Appearance is ink black. The head on the draft version dissipated faster than that of the bottle, that could be due to several factors. Taste is more roasted malt, coconut, coffee, and chocolate. Full bodied with creamy mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden and sneaks up on you fast. Overall a world class non-barrel aged imperial stout.

Aromas of coffee and alcohol predominate. Also toffee, chocolate, plums, prunes and raisins. Hops provide a generalized bitterness. Color is nearly black with a spare light-brown head. The 12% alcohol provides a high degree of alcohol sweetness; there is a reasonable bitterness level with that generalized bitterness typical of imperial stouts. Full bodied, prominent alcohol with its warming mouthfeel. Texture is creamy with slightly low carbonation. Finish is long with alcohol, coffee, plum. Overall this is a very good beer. Its complex, lots of different aromas. However on the minus side I do feel the alcohol and coffee are too dominate.

On tap at Bloodhound Bar Brisbane. Pours black as night with thin tan head. Aroma of chocolate that carries thru to the palate with licorice undertones. Rich, rich, rich and delish.

Jet black with almost no head. Roma is extremely dark, rich stone fruit, coffee, huge molasses and toffee notes, caramel, good fruitcake -- very luxurious. Taste is sweet but not cloying with a velvety palate and a long, silky finish. A very good imperial stout.

Bottle. Black pour with a tan head with a reddish hue. Taste and aroma is dark fruit, roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. One of the best of the style.

Bottle at home. Pours thick black, foamy brown head. Aromas of coffee, caramel, toffee. Dark fruits too, though subtler than expected. Taste is initially a medium sweetness, with bitterness coming on stronger later, some alcohol but very well balanced. Body is heavy and it has a great silky soft feel. Finish is nice and lingering, with perfect balance of flavours. This one is really great.

750 ml bottle from Hawthorne Cellars. Pours pitch black with small to medium tan head. I let it warm for about 20 minutes before drinking. Great aroma of coffee and roasted malt. Smooth, velvety mouth flavour. Big coffee and caramel flavours up front supported by balanced hops and malt. Outstanding! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
