22 oz bottle poured into a tulip (this bottle says 8.5% abv). Pours reddish amber with thick off-white colored head. Aroma is sweet caramel malt with a hint of hop spice. Taste is big bitter caramel malt with notes of pine and grapefruit hops and faint burnt notes on the finish. Rich, and slightly thick, although not syrupy. Very tasty, although lacking the malty sweetness that most other big Imperial Reds have. A big winter beer nonetheless, and delicious.
Bottle from Beers of the World. Aroma of bread and caramel malt, floral and citrus hops. Surprisingly well balanced in my opinion. BeerRenter76 (1007) - Texas, USA - MAY 10, 2017
Originally rated on 2/7/09. Aroma of pine, citrus, and some floral overtones to go along with the sweet malts. Appearance was a heavy looking deep red body with yeast floaters that were suspended. Mouthfeel was nice it was hearty, and chewy but smooth. Flavor started with the pine hoppiness but the caramel malts quickly came in and complimented the hops. The alcohol was slightly noticeable, and it had a nice mellow aftertaste. Overall this was a pretty nice winter brew, thats worth a try. beerlover503a (18) - Alabama, USA - MAY 9, 2017
Everything about this Ale Smith IPA is almost perfect. Great Aroma and Taste! rumore (484) - Rimini, ITALY - MAY 4, 2017
From the bottle. Pours red/brown with cream foam. Aroma is dry fruits, nuts, figs, citrus. Body is medium-dense. Taste is sweet at first, then bitter. Finish is short. garroch (26) - - APR 21, 2017
Not that much going on with the aroma; had to stick my nose so deep in it that I snorted a gulp's worth. Once expelled, a pleasant sweet smell remained. Nice thick body, aggressive bitterness that lingers and fades to a warm toasty malt finish. Might supplant Nosferatu as my favorite red.

Paid ~$2.75 for a single 12floz bottle (BOD 10.04.2016), and poured into a tulip glass. Appears murky, copper-brown in color, and aroma consists of dried fruits (raisin and apricot - malty and hoppy). This is an American strong ale comparable to Stone’s Arrogant Bastard. A filling beer with tempered hop bitterness. Toffee, fig, dried cherries, and oily resin complete the palate. It has been about ten years since I had Yulesmith, and it is similar to what I remember. salvaticas (720) - - APR 15, 2017
Bottle pour. Pours a cloudy red brown amber. Heavy bitterness. Subtle mix of malt and hops. Strong alcohol.

Draft to taster. Looks good for the style; a transparent lighter amberish caramel with foamy very light caramel head. Smells of caramel, piney and bitter hops, and a bit of toast. Mouthfeel is medium full-bodied, moderately bitter, and mildly warming. An enjoyable sipper, but a full pour would be plenty. gopherfan99 (1775) - Minnesota, USA - MAR 7, 2017
Bottle; pours amber with a khaki head; aroma of citrus and pine with a hint of caramel; taste more bitter with a hint of sweetness citrus, caramel, and pine; finish dry and bitter with lingering pine ALIBALI (1988) - Kiel, GERMANY - FEB 16, 2017
