2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
I want to like this desperately since its from 2 breweries I love. Aroma is like baby food, taste adds apples and brettanomyces. Disappointing.

Draft at The Pour House in Westmont, NJ.
Pours a hazy, dark golden yellow color with straw like edges and a pillowy, two finger white head that slowly settled into a lasting ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind.
Slight spicy aroma with bready yeast, citrus and pale fruit. Not much smoke but has some subtle funky yeast. Hints of pepper and coriander with a strong bread and citrus zest character. Smells like a slightly funky tripel with only faint smoke after it warns.
Medium bodied and slightly more tart than expected. Again, not very smokey with just a very faint presence after it warms considerably. Peppery with clove and coriander flavor followed by bread and funky yeast notes. Lots of citrus sweetness with grapefruit and lemon juice toward the finish. Also, there’s a touch of sweet boozy toward the back end. Only slightly different than the regular tripel but not as good or complex. The smoke presence is way to faint for my preference and the slightly funky flavor is a bit odd here. Theydon_Bois (19490) - Hazlemere, the lower Xhitlerns, Buckinghamshire, ENGLAND - MAR 20, 2014
Keg at Mikkeller Viktoriagade, 02/03/14.
Lightly hazed golden with moderate off white spotting that clears to nothing.
Nose is subtle smoke, bitter orange, citric fruit peel, spice, caramel, prunes, dates.
Taste comprises punchy citric notes, candied orange peel, clove, fruit cake mix, very subtle smoke, bitter tropical tang.
Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying closure.
Not getting much in the way of smoke, perhaps a good thing for the style, solid enough fayre none the less. HonusWagner (2168) - Florida, USA - AUG 24, 2013
Weird beer, kind of smoky, a little spicy. Not something I want to drink lots of but fine in small doses. argo0 (14127) - Washington DC, USA - AUG 15, 2013
Draft. Clear light amber body topped by medium white head. Aroma is moderately sweet, candi sugar, delicate smoked cheese. Taste is medium sweet, bread, some candi sugar, faint smoke. Medium body, low carbonation. revolution2718 (379) - New Jersey, USA - JUN 9, 2013
An interesting tripel. Nose is smoke and spices, taste follows the same pattern. Good body, some alcohol taste. Smoke permeates and comes to the front, with a nice spicy alcoholic kick following.

On tap at Milltown - thanks, Ethan! Interesting variation on (I assume) Allagash’s base tripel. Cloudy gold pour with plenty carb, and a ripe, raw look to it. Certainly quite yeasty in the nose too, along with prominent spice and quite mild smoke (from smoked grain? smoked malt?). Almost like the tripel with a quarter traditional ale blended in or something, a modest addition to a solid beer. But the overall impression is that some of the tripel’s quality is docked, while it’s not fully realized as a trad or a smoked. EricTeusink (700) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - MAY 15, 2013
Wanted to do a half pour, but Leon’s wasn’t having it, so I gave half away to my server. Perhaps I will be rewarded with some beer karma. Pours barely darker than a lager with good head and lacing. The scent of cloves permeates your nostrils like you have just walked into mountain antique shop. The sweet, bitter, and spiciness blend together well in this very original brew. Draft @ Mikkeller & Friends, Copenhagen. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a small white head. Has a fruity malty spicy yeasty smoky aroma. Sweetish malty spicy yeasty smoky flavor. Has a fruity malty spicy yeasty weak smoky finish. OleR (4804) - Oslo, NORWAY - MAY 6, 2013
From tap @Mikkeller & Friends. Unclear yellow golden body. Small white head. Spicy, light sourish-sweet fruit aroma. Grassy notes and a whiff of smoke. Faint smoky flavor, paired with a fine fruitiness and some sweet-accenteted malts. Well-bodied. Light sweet and hop-bitter finish. Nicely balanaced and very tasty. Pours a pretty clean soft straw yellow with two fingers of dense white head. Nose shows soft stone fruits and some spicy esters. Smoke plays a moderate role here and definitely shows itself in the flavor and aroma, not over the top though. A soft malty sweetness and spicy yeast character balance and compliment the smoke well. Light bodied and dry with a slightly zesty quality.
