Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique. Poured into a goblet. No head, only a faint covering, dark amber to brown colored. Bubbles visible. Smells spicy, molasses, black licorice, yeasty and roasted malt. Bold and rich flavor. Roasted malt, some sweetness at the beginning, bready, lots of burnt malt at the end. Complex profile and perfectly put together. Light and "fluffy" texture. Low carbonation. Incredible! Just a bit more on the appearance and this is near perfect.

Growler from Monroe Super Buy Rite in Englishtown, NJ. Translucent cola brown color is topped by a large frothy tan head. Faint roasted malt nose hints at ash and charcoal. First sip yields sweet roasted malt flavor that touches on coffee and chocolate. Picking up notes of dark candi sugar, cocoa, tobacco, raisins, burnt wood and magnolia leaves. Yeasty, smoky, Belgian funky yeasty notes in finish. Sweet, dark and intriguing. Delicious and soulful.

UPDATED: APR 11, 2017 Lovely ebony black stout. Silky on the tongue, notes of smoke, coffee, sweet chocolate and caramel. One of the sweeter stouts I?ve had. Overall, it?s good, with everything I enjoy about a good, black stout. From a bottle gifted by a friend. I?ll pick it up when I see it again.

The beer has weak aroma. The yeast taste is buried behind dark chocolate malt which is pretty harsh.The flavor is quite complex and it is interesting. I am just not sold on it.

November 25th, 2014 - Allagash Black is black, front to back, though the the foam wasnt really stacked. With a sniff, the beer I attacked, rich with charcoal and wet stone, backed with a little chicory too. The flavor was packed with alcohol and light raisins, though lacked a heavier palate. Instead the carbonation was jacked, almost rough on the aftertaste.

A Stout which makes in the sweetness, share round by roasted, with notes of licorice, dark chocolate and toast. Bitter is on the roasted coated by earthy and grassy hop. Silky texture and long and roasted finale with grape and a touch of sweetness.

Guess I never had this so grabbed a bottle probably a tad old. Browner pour. Nose is burnt coffee. Taste of roasted malt, chocolate, cofffee ground, earthy, prunes, licorice. Creamy mouthfeel little burnt toast on finish.

12oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a tiny beige head. Aroma is somewhat metallic, yeasty, and with a little coffee coming through as it warms. Taste is toffee malt, chocolate, some coffee, a little dark fruit, and a good amount of yeast. A touch of pepper. Lightly roasty with a bitter hop finish. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. A little watery but a pleasingly oil mouthfeel overall.

Room-filling aromas of yeast malt and licorice. Pours a deep black brown with a thin tan head. Big flavors of sweet coffee and chalk well balanced. Mild carbonation with an oily mouthfeel. Complex with a nice distinctive style. Very good.

Bottle from the brewery. This is a very complex beer -- its got some similarities to a Dubbel, with a raisin bread sweetness that reminds me of some of the best Belgian dubbels, but it also has a roasted malt character that reminds me of Guinness. Fruit esters from the yeast, before it finishes quick and clean. Its almost like someone brewed a stout with berries...
