Boulder Strong Ale Fest. Dark brown appearance with a light brown head. Licorice, chocolate, Belgian yeasty, light bourbon aroma. Creamy, a bit boozy, sweet cany, caramel, Belgian yeasty, milk chocolate flavor with a warming, somewhat boozy finish.

At Avery’s 2012 Strong Ale Fest. Clear dark brown with a thin light tan head. Aroma is kinda oak-y toffee, with a bit of spicy "blackness". Odd. Flavor is creamy chocolate with a slightly bitter oak tone with a bourbon/vanilla shade. But the texture tastes a little watered down.

On tap at Paradiso. Pours pitch black with a small tan head. Little lace. Aroma is whiskey, chocolate ganache, Godiva liquor, light cayenne pepper. Very oily palate. Lots of rich vanilla and some cognac showing through in the taste as well as some light flemish sour notes, vinegar, sherry. Some sticky sweetness in the finish. Yum.

Pour on tap at Avery Strong Ale 2012, dark brownish black with thin tan head, aroma brought nasty notes of cabbage, green bean, mineral and some rotten fruits, some slight vanilla maybe but the smell is awful. Taste however is completely different, nice roasted and ester notes, hints of vanilla and slight bourbon into a dark fruit middle, slight chocolate and espresso goes into a roasted finish. Interesting how different the aroma and taste were.

Draft. Blackish beer with a tan head. Bourbon and light roast aroma. Bourbon and caramel flavor with light nuttiness. Medium bodied. Bourbon and caramel linger with light nuttiness and light yeast.

Draft. Pours near black with a thin head. Sweet and roasted malty aroma with more sweet bourbon. The flavor has bourbon, light roasted malts, toffee, and molasses. Not bad.

Deep black pour. The aroma is quite herbal with a lot of vanilla/caramel bourbon aroma. Intensely bourbony behind some sweet black licorice, rich sweet malt and more bourbony character as well. All of the yeast contribution to this brew seems to have been beaten out of it. Rich cocoa and bourbon. I like it actually - but it’s definitely unsubtle.

Wonderful beer. Pours black with good mocha head and lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate, roast malt, some nut and some subtle bourbon notes. Looks syrupy but consistency feels more thick on the tongue than syrupy. Booze well-disguised. Finishes bittersweet. Tap at brewery.

[5260-20130426] Tap. Bourbon barrel roasted wood malt aroma. Slightly hazy, dark brown red-hued body with a long-lasting creamy tan head. Sweetened coffee malt and roasted wooden bourbon barrel flavour. Full body. Interesting to try. (7/3+/7-/3/15) 3.5
