Allagash had the honor of hosting De Struise Brouwers Brewmaster Urbain Coutteau and his co-workers Carlo Grootaert, Phil Driessens and Peter Bruin along with the "Homebrew Chef" Sean Paxton of homebrewchef.com on August 29. The Brewers with our Brewmaster, Jason Perkins collaborated on a Belgium Blonde called Fedeltá which means Fidelity in Italian. De Struise had previously brewed a version of this beer at their farm brewery in Belgium. After collaborating strategically over e-mail, phone and in person on brew day, the five brewers were able to put all their hard work into a great brew. Fedeltá, 8.2% Blonde was brewed using a selection of imported Pilsner Malt, Domestic Pale Malt as well as 15% Wheat Malt. American Cascade and Amarillo Hops were also selected resulting in 35 IBU. Also added in the boil was Cane Sugar and Honey. Fedeltá was fermented with our house Belgian-style strain, producing a subtle ester profile. The result is a smooth beer with subtle flavors of spice, honey, and vanilla as well as citrus hop flower notes. Fedeltá will be available in limited markets, draft only in the fall.

Draught at Sunset Grill, December 2008. Honey-colored golden body has a gentle haze to it and a medium white head is produced. Very little of the hops mentioned in the nose. You’d think you’d be able to get a good whiff of cascade and/or amarillo, but it’s very minimal. Maybe a bit of tangerine and green grass mixed in to the yeastiness, from the amarillo. Light pepper and more soft fruits round out the finish. Light bodied, probably in part due to the honey and sugar added, with pils malt honey-vanilla and the typical Allagash house yeast mustiness. A little chewy/doughy on the end with some sweet sponge cake-like notes. No flaws or anything, certainly, and not every beer has to be something crazy, but you wonder what was the inspiration or goal for this one? None of the delectable hops of the best European saisons, nor nearly enough maltiness of the best Belgian Strong Goldens, nor enough malt/yeast snappiness for a Belgian blonde.

Old rating from ’09. On tap at Julians served in a tulip Appears pale light gold with a big fluffy/lumpy head that stays. nice lacing. Smell is tart citrus fruit, some spice & yeast. The taste is light citrus fruit up front. Hops quickly follow. A little yeast too. Delicious. Nice lingering aftertaste...bready. Super smooth. Light/Medium body. Fine carbonation. Great. This one is a wonderful beer. So pleasant and balanced.

Moderately clear pour, pale body with a small white head. The aroma is herbal hops, flowers, and some light cookie dough. The taste is slightly sweet, moderately bitter, some fresh herbs, some floral notes, lots of cotton candy, slightly vinous. Medium/full body is rough with a lasting, sticky, vegetal bitterness.

(Old BA rate - tap) Light orange/yellow gold. Poured with a thinner white head that held pretty well. Citruisy, spicey, get some cloves and malt sweetness. Spices show up first, but fairly light; lemon sherbet; and pretty sweet. Lighter, slightly sticky, and spritzy carbonation. Nicely drinkable, and pleasant. Alcohol warmth provides a soothing character to the brew. Overall, pretty aligned with what I would expect for the style, and a nicely done brew.

Cloudy golden pour with a medium white head. Aroma of fruity esters, bubble-gum and some funk. Good flavor of bubble-gum, fruits and hops. The body is light to medium with a creamy texture and lively carbonation. Allagash and De Struise are great brewers, this is very enjoyable.

On draft at Capones. Pours a clear gold colour with a small off-white head. Aroma of pine, honey, citrus, and floral hops. Flavour is the same as the aroma but rather weak. Also, there is a yeasty flavour present in addition to the pine, citrus, honey and hops. Average, at best.

One of my favorites from Allagash. Had it on tap at Blind Tiger. Poured a nice, hazy gold with a medium head. Nose of sweet malts and some wild yeast. Flavor was very sweet, with strong notes of honey and yeast. Smooth on the finish with a pleasant warming sensation from the ABV. Really good.
