Editor’s Note: Rebrewed in 2014 and billed as Double Wit with Ginger and Ginger Wit.

Another year, another batch of Fluxus has been brewed to mark the change and growth of Allagash Brewing. With a new and different recipe, our 2008 batch is a double white beer brewed with spices and fresh grated ginger. A double white beer calls for twice the amount of malted and raw wheat, which casts an elegant cloudiness over this mango-colored beer. The aroma boasts of herbal and minty notes, as well as hints of clove and candied ginger. Fluxus offers a perfectly balanced flavor with a warm, clean finish and a lingering spiciness.

Fresh bottle and draught at Sunset Grill and Great Lost Bear. A clear, bronze with tangerine hints and a loosely retained white head. Dry, peppery ginger and clean minerality in the nose produce none of the candy-sweetness that the yarrow of last batch was noted for. Succulent mandarin and light clove play about the nose, with some mild banana fruitiness and a lasting, dry brace of wheat on the finish. The flavor shows immaculate clarity, without a muddled or vegetal spiciness, almost like basil and surprisingly tame and controlled for ginger. Citrus and light bubble gum are painted overtop a deep, yet well-attenuated pils malt with a snappy, crisp yeast finish and even a mild hoppiness. Alcohol is not noted, nor does it seem like an "imperial" wit in a bad sense (as in, overdone). Just a strong wit bier, but retaining its refreshing character. With warming and breathing it actually loses balance; the carbonation receding to produce a bit too much sweetness/stickiness. Best quaffed quickly as a refresher. Great improvement on last batch, methinks. Much better restraint on the spicing.

On tap at SLL tasting. Allagash Ginger Wit. Poured a cloudy, golden color with a foamy head that fell to a ring around the edges. Smell of strong ginger, citrus (orange), spice (pepper, coriander) along with light herbaceous and earthiness from the ginger. Taste has the ginger come on mildly at the start, but ends packing a punch! The ginger intensity builds, yet the citrus and spice flavors are not completely overwhelmed. It is a very fresh, earthy ginger flavor. More subtle flavors come in to play with pear and apple notes, a hint of banana, and spicy notes of coriander and peppercorns. Light in body, a little creamy, highly carbonated and crisp.

750 ml bottle from notes. Pours a hazy orange gold color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor had doughy bread, Belgian yeast, big ginger, orange marmalade, citrus, some additional spices, hints of pepper, decent enough but at the time I thought this was overpriced.

Tap at boda in Portland. Pours a hazed gold with a thin white head. Soft wheat and a bit of musk on the nose. Faint ginger and a bit of lemon on the nose, touches of banana and ginger. Sift spicy ginger into the finish, musk and Soft wheat. Faintly spicy ginger and s hit of musk. Long warm finish with a bit of musk asks hints of ginger. Lovely.

Draft at Churchkey as Ginger Wit. Cloudy yellow color. Aroma of light spice, lemon peel, peppery hay. Taste is tangy ginger and orange peel.

Tap at Sam’s. Pours a light hazy golden orange with a small steady white head. Nose is ginger, light Belgian yeast, little else. Flavor is similar. Pretty one-dimensional and boring for this rater.

Draft. Cloudy pour. Nice spice with thirst quenching ginger and citrus. Drinks a lot easier than the above suggests.

Drought. Hazy yellow with small foamy off-whitie head, yeast aroma, high carbonation, ginger and citrus taste, medium finish with bitter aftertaste. Not too gingery.
