Draft @ Barcade. Dark pour with a lasting brown head. Aroma of cocoa and dark sweet malts. Flavor is of toffee, roasted , and chocolate malts. Run of the mill Imperial stout. egajdzis (6776) - Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 5, 2010
Nearly opaque, dark brown color with a small light tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of cocoa, vanilla beans, roasted malts, and some caramel. Taste of chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, tobacco, and light alcohol in the finish. Rciesla (5607) - Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA - DEC 4, 2010
Draft. Pours a black body with a tan head. Smokey malt tones, chocolate malt body. Malty and overpowering. Vanilla and light roast y malt tones, brittle with and earth y hoppiness and a dry roasted malt body. Good. kramer (6908) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 1, 2010
25 oz bottle. Pours a dark black body with a beautiful firm one inch brown head that slowly faded to a thin covering. Lots of heavy lacing. The nose is super rich and decadent, full of roast and chocolate with that slight ’house character’ yeastiness that I get from many Allagash beers. Dark roast coffee, minimal to no alcohol, dark fruits, I could just smell this one and be happy. The flavor is a touch overly roasty and burnt for my tastes, but it’s still a pretty fine beer. The cocoa notes meld well with the slight sweetness and coffee flavors. A nice hop accent keeps the sweetness in check. Well restrained alcohol for being such a huge beer. Very smooth and soft on the tongue. A little too highly carbonated for me, it tends to froth up a bit, but a sufficient resting period with a few swirls help alleviate that. This was quite a delicious Imperial Stout, another winner from Allagash. MartinT (10102) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - NOV 22, 2010
My Bottom Line :
dmac (6501) - Toms River, New Jersey, USA - NOV 17, 2010
Vegetal notes (from the cocoa?) mar this Imperial Stout’s roasted malts and marzipan allusions, as fruity edges are met by an overtly phenolic finish.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A generous head of foam decorates the darkness.
-The roasted malt bitterness and cocoa are not gelling, imho.
-The perceived iodine-like phenols might be from peated smoke... I hope so, anyway.
-The soft carbonation makes its flaws more apparent
750 ml bottle shared by pineypower on what we can easily say was not one of my better rating days, 28 hours of no sleep and then rating does not bode well. Thanks and sorry again Dean. From whatmy notes tell me I liked this beer. Poured a solid black body with a thick full frothy beige head. Aroma of chocolate, cola, vanilla. Full bodied that finished both silky and milky. Flavors of chocolate pudding, tobacco, vanilla, dark roasted malts. Nicely done. pineypower (3346) - Ocean County, New Jersey, USA - NOV 16, 2010
Bottle, that I wish I could find another of. Pours black with a nice beige head. Aroma is of heavy chocolate, roast, dark fruits and light alcohol. Taste is very complex, with a thick yet smooth mouthfeel. Lots of chocolate, roast, some earth, light smoke, and some slightly fruity notes show up in there also with only a small hint of the ABV. Thick, warming and rich. Well done. nickd717 (4901) - San Francisco, California, USA - NOV 9, 2010
GABF 2010. Pours darkest brown in color with a substantial tan head sitting on top, and good lacing. The aroma is really excellent, rather intense yet balanced, with chocolate, roast, tobacco, sweet toffee, and floral hops. The flavor has sweet toffee as well as chocolate malts, earthiness, roast, coffee, chocolate, a little rubberiness, and more hops than average for the style. Smooth and full-bodied with soft carbonation. Not too syrupy as some imperial stouts can be. A very solid beer overall. Hopefully I’ll get to try this one again. Served on draft at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark brown color with a dark brown medium sized head. Good head retention and lacing. Nutty aroma with caramel, smoke and an herbal finish. The taste is roasted malts, chocolate, smoke, nutty notes, leafy hops with a lingering bitterness. Medium-full bodied. arone12 (934) - Maryland, USA - OCT 23, 2010
Pours a dark black color with a mediumish brown head. Smells of coffee and chocolate. Taste is very much of coffee. Quite tasty. I like the flavor of this beer very much. Mmm
