Allagash Fluxus is a beer of continuous change. Brewed differently every year to commemorate our anniversary, this years Fluxus is a huge Imperial Chocolate Stout. Weighing in at 10.3% ABV, it is one of the strongest beers that Allagash has ever brewed. The brain child of brewer Doug Klippenstein, this beer utilized a unique brewing process that used wort from a smaller brew, as the water for mashing the grain for this brew. Maine-grown barley was used as the base for this grain bill that also included a blend of three roasted malts and oats. Fluxus was appropriately hopped with both US Saaz and Glacier hops. Just before knock out, fifty pounds of Taza roasted Cacao nibs were added to the whirlpool. The result is a thick, sticky stout with tons of both roasted and chocolate flavors, aromas of tobacco and cocoa, and a surprisingly sweet, creamy finish.

As part of our Tribute Series, Allagash proudly donates $1 per bottle sold to the Allagash Pediatric Nurses Scholarship at the Maine Medical Center. This scholarship directly supports the training of nurses in the field of pediatrics.

Acquired in trade. Pours near black with nice, 1 finger espresso head. Aroma is dark chocolate, fudge brownie, molasses. Taste is sweet with a little roast and some light bitterness. Medium bodied and slick texture. Smooth and delicious!

750ml bottle. Pours a deep black color with a thick mocha head that falls slightly and retains throughout with mild lacing. The aroma is rather intense yet balanced, with chocolate, roast, tobacco, sweet toffee, and floral hops. Taste is rich dark chocolate, roasted nuts, a little tobacco, and evident vanilla. Very rich and complex. Roasted malt is mellow. Alcohol is very well hidden. Full body with moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is silky, chewy, and creamy.

[My bottle (650ml) shared with GregClow, jercraigs & mabel -- c/o Glouglouburp] Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with a small diminishing frothy tan head. Nice aroma of roasted malt, chocolate and vanilla. Flavour is lightly sour along with roasted malt, chocolate, notes of red wine and hops in the finish. Medium bodied. A lovely beer.

2014-09-26. Black body with a small tan head. 3++ Aroma has a tangy quality to the ashy roasty cocoa. Flavour is similar, tangy fruity character melds with cocoa in interesting ways but Im not sure I like the results. Average plus bodied palate, carbonation. Okay, not sure if the tangy character is intentional or reflective of the age of the beer. Bottle shared by BlankBoy.

Bottle shared thanks to Paul from Brown. Pours a thick black with thin ring of tan head that leaves a light ring of lace. Aroma of soy, chocolate, slight coconut, and booze. Taste follows, lots of booze, good carbonation. Solid after aging, I imagine this was not that good right out of the gate.

Reviewed 9-1-10 I had this one on tap over at Pizza Paradiso in DC. Ap: Pitch black, with about a one inch head. The brew was so dark that I honestly couldnt even see if there was any carbonation. Ar: Dates, brown sugar, and molasses were very prominent. T: Not sweet at all, but not bitter either. This one is definitely not a "coffee" IS. I would describe this one as a fairly smooth chocolate milkshake, as opposed to a bitter, dark chocolate dessert drink. I still a bit surprise by how thin this seems compared to most ISs Ive tried, and it doesnt have that dark cinnamon afterburn that Ive come to expect from the style. P: Quite a bit of glass lacing, but I never really noticed anything too offensive palate-wise. However, the cigarette "ash" lingering is not pleasant. O: Fairly smooth, even for the high ABV. I still would not seek this one out. Ive seen this one in the store, and the price is outrageous relative to the product.

In short: One hell of a messy black ale. Not fun.
How: Bottle, a few times. Once fresh (pretty bad) and then this rating for a slightly aged bottle (not very good either).
The look: Black body topped by a small tan head with good retention.
In long: Nose is a bit chocolaty, moderately roasted, cardboard and with strange notes of coconuts and vegetal matters of some kind. Body is medium and with abundant carbonation. Taste is dirty blackened malts, rather earthy (borderline peaty), cocoa powder, salty soy sauce, peanut butter (!), sensation of chewing on a houseplant, cardboard, other weird stuff. Both fresh and slightly aged it was one hell of a weird beer, I dont think this beer turned out the way Allagash had planned. My last rating of the night, then more beer, then woke up with a pizza slice in my pants so I figured it was probably best for me to delete all my call history and text messages.

Bottle at home. Pours opaque black with a medium, frothy tan head, short retention with spare lacing. Aroma is chocolate, roast malt, prunes, raisins, light tartness, and peppery alcohol. Flavor is dark malt and chocolate, dark dried fruits and a sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation.

j12601 (10259) - Poughkeepsie, New York, USA - MAY 4, 2013
Bottle courtesy of Dany after TAP-NY. Pours a deep brown to black with a large tanned white to beige head. Big chewy roast on the nose with a little bit of sourness. Tastes of salty old chocolate. Wrong and old. Plums and cocoa, chocolate and long roast. Lingering old cocoa and weird oxidization.
