Keg @ Charleston Brewvival 2015. Amber pour with a small off-white head. Nose is replete with red forest fruits and a bit of woody funk. Mild earthy green biomass punctuated by sharp, acetic tang. Une bière rousse, ambrée, tirant quelque peu sur le bruneâtre, avec aucune carbonatation, et une petite effervescence. Au nez, cerises, levures sauvages, myrtilles, fruits des champs. En bouche, c’est assez impressionnant avec plusieurs goûts différents - levures sauvages, surette, pommes, fruits des champs... C’est difficile de tout comprendre ce qui se passe dans ma bouche. On commence par le commencement : entrée de levures sauvages, gros côté surette, pommes que l’on attribue au vieillissement en fût de brandy de pomme. On tap @ Allagash. Copper colored beer with a white head. Strong caramel malt, oak, and cherry on the nose. Definitely shows its strength with some booze on the tongue. Plenty of grassy funk, lemon juice, and a bit of red wine vinegar. There’s a pretty strong dark, vinous fruit quality to it which I like, but not sure I can get past the booze and acetic aspects. Cherry red and chestnut-auburn body shows a high clarity and beige head atop with moderate retention.
Tight fruits packed in to the nose with cherry, apple, peach esters and lightly spicy, grainy character from the barrel aging. Vanilla, lactic acid and light acetic acid emerge with a honey-caramel maltiness backing it. Seems fairly well-integrated between malt, acid and barrel, though its size and the strong apple brandy character is certainly felt. Lots of brandy, oak and big fruity acids lingering.
Lightly sour in the mouth, with cherry and brandy notes mixing with caramel and vanilla malt notes to give a faithful, if rather strong impression of a Sour Red. Tight, medium carbonation an no alcohol, but there is some acetic character, lots of wood dryness and spicy, lightly liquorous brandy character. Fine, but I think Allagash excels at delicate flavors and low to mid gravity sours, which this certainly is not.
Sampled at GABF 2016 with Paul and Larry. Pours a deep golden red body with thin off white lacing. Sour fruit and vinegar on the nose. Mouthfeel is tart and acidic with notes of cherry, tart wine and nail polish remover. NikkTwist (3406) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 15, 2016
UPDATED: OCT 15, 2016 Draft at Khyber Pass. Top of a keg. Hazy red raspberry pour with no lasting foam. Sharp sour red with strong oak notes. Tart cherries. Currants. Cocoa nibs. Dried strawberries. Pours a rusty amber color with two fingers of fizzy eggshell foam. Nose has a nice inviting baked apple, soft caramel, tart cherry, basement must and a lingering vanilla. Palate follows with soft apple skin flavors up front that evolve with layers of berry and cherry. The mouthfeel is a bit chewier than expected and the flavors are slightly subdued but in a interesting way. Gala apple, hints of caramel, leather, berry, plum... nice brew ! Tap. Darker peach rust orange. Peachy, berry, oak, vinous, sour fruit in aroma. Flavor is lightly sour apple, strawberry, oak, slight white wine. Lighter body.
