Appearance: Hazed, amber-esque body with a smallish, ivory-hued head fed by little streams of bubbles.
Smell: A moderate aroma of tartish whole cherries forward of the faintly sweet-scented, toasty malts and thin wafts of phenols.
Taste: Tastes of, well, cherries, as one might imagine. Some toasted bread and muddled caramel maltiness. Lightly sweet, lightly spicy. Brightly tart and with modest lactic touches popping up here and there. Drying, well-carbonated finish with lingering tart cherries accents.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation.
Overall: Old HLT is a likable cherry brew. I was going to liken it to a more lively carbonated Quelque Chose, but, it’s been nearly eight long years since I last had it, and, with all the many brain cells I’ve outright killed since then, perhaps I should leave the comparison alone.
Bottle very generously shared by Gene. Thanks! Cork came out like it was shot out of a gun. Hazy orange pour with a small white head. Aroma of cherry, lemon, grass, and oak. Slight malt sweetness, some must, and a hint of funk. The flavor is quite fruit forward. Good cherry flavor, some sweet malt, oak, and vanilla. Grass, lemon, and a moderate tartness. A hint of vinegar, minimal funk, and a dry finish. heemer77 (5360) - Urbandale, Iowa, USA - JUN 26, 2013
Bottle shared by adnielsen. Poured a cloudy deep orange with an off white head. The nose was orange peels and dirt. Notes of funk with tart and dry bits. The taste was tart leather and lemons. Notes of grass and hay. Tasty beer. beerguy00 (186) - Fountain Valley, California, USA - OCT 5, 2014
Nice amber color with a small head. Nice tart aroma of cherries, however not as noticeable in the flavor. wedgie9 (2702) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - JAN 23, 2015
From notes. Tasted on 1/27/13 from a corked and caged 375mL bottle. Pours hazy orange-amber with a thick white head that leaves average lace. The nose is dominated by earthy, natural cherry with some caramel malt underlying. The flavor has a bit more caramel malt prevalent, but is a nicely sour lemon acidic, with tons of cherry. The body is medium with average carbonation and a long caramel and cherry finish.

Got the last pour of the bottle so it was a murky dark golden with no head and no lacing for me but for others it was hazy with no head and no lacing. Nose is of oak and light vinegar. This being a 2011 bottle it didn’t seem too affected by age. Taste gives a slight hint of the age with some sherry/madeira but nothing bad. More oak and cherry wine. Body is medium, carbonation moderate and mouthfeel is certainly vinous. Overall a pretty nice one that I would have been curious to try fresh. Still, it held up pretty well for a 5+ bottle and was a nice drink for sure. Drake (14059) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - APR 18, 2012
Served on draft at Beer Run. Pours a hazy red color with a large head. Good head retention. Aroma of cherries, citrus, herbal and vegetal notes and a bit of earthiness. The taste is tart cherries, cherry pie filling, herbal notes and faint caramel malts. Medium bodied. Nice. sonnycheeba (6259) - Federal Hill, Baltimore, Maryland, USA - APR 28, 2012
Tap. Pours hazy amber with average, fizzy white head; short retention and spare lacing. Aroma is sour fruit, cereal and cookie malt, floral hops, and light oak. Flavor is balanced malt and sour fruit esters with faint hops; dry finish. Medium body, carbonation, and warmth. TURDFERGUSON (4058) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - MAY 19, 2012
Tap at Sam’s in Durham. I ordered a glass for $7 and didn’t realize they were going to pour me a huge ass glass. I was trying to go in and out of the store. oh well. This was pretty good. Dark reddish, black cherry color, with a large foamy off-white head. Notes of sour black cherry, earthy, yeasty funk. A little muddled and watery when compared to the big boys.
