3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: FEB 2, 2015 Pretty good stuff. Not a spectacular doppelbock but not too bad. Serving: Bottle
09-Jan-10 (500-ml bottle: Purchased 30-Dec-09 for $2.79 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA)sic1314 (4775) - Leiden, NETHERLANDS - NOV 3, 2014
As expected, it’s extremely malty and very sweet, but not sugary sweet. Lots of chocolate, cola, some molasses, prune, toast, earth, and decayed wood, but some alcohol coming through as well. No roastiness or bitterness. The nose is very malty and woodsy, but fairly cheesy as well and somewhat alcoholic, so while the flavor is enjoyable enough, the nose is less enticing. Full bodied on the palate, sweet but not cloying, moderately carbonated, and very lightly acidic to help balance the sweetness. Medium-brown in color and fairly transparent. The light-tan head builds to half an inch when poured before settling to a swirling filmy layer and wide ring. Some spotty lace on the glass. All things considered, this seems a little short of being average for a doppelbock. A lot of good points, but it lacks the unabashed rich malty flavor I like in doppelbocks, and it’s marred by the cheesy quality.
Poured clear reddish amber with a hearty off white head. Aroma of candy sweet berries, caramel malt. Medium body, flavour as the aroma, a fair bit of liquorice, moderately sweet, lightly bitter. ThirstyBird (2992) - Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, ENGLAND - FEB 16, 2014
Old rating from ’08. It smells sweet, malty a little smokey and a bit boozy. Taste is sweet, caramel, toasted malt with some chocolate on the back end. The alcohol from the aroma is present in the taste but not in a negative way. Mouthfeel is wonderful! It is silky smooth and creamy with a rich medium body to it. Drinkability is quite good though one would probably be enough due to it’s richness and alcohol level. I would be happy to run into this doppelbock again! Dark brown pour, frothy white head. Aroma of sweet roasted nuts. Flavor was toast, caramel, malts. reebtogi (6341) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - OCT 25, 2011
500ml swingtop bottle poured almost black in color with a finger of light tan head leaving some nice lacing on side of glass. Aroma is roasted malts and some chocolate and hops. Taste is malty sweetness with a hint of chocolate and a earthy hoppy bitter finish. This is one fine doppelbock which is not as sweet as some of the others, more balanced between malt and hops and I find this enjoyable. kappldav123 (6126) - GERMANY - MAY 29, 2011
Bottle looks simple, but good. Beer in the glass very dark, almost black, nice head. Starts strong and malty, notes of chocolate and caramel, modest bitter, some fruity notes of plum. Finish not as strong as the beginning, could be a bit sweeter. Still a great doppelbock! fiulijn (21022) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 17, 2011

Beautiful dark amber color, with red shades; generous creamy head. I had more expectations for this beer; indeed the aroma is very simple, some caramel; the body strength is good, but only when the beer warms a bit; quite strong caramel flavor, sweetish. Correct bitterness; the final is also a bit nutty. Easy.
Swing top bottle. Dark brown color. Malty bready aroma and flavor with roast and ash. Medium to full bodied. Hints of pear and plums. Powerful bock with a long roasty finish.
