Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Smoked malts to finish with further restrained chili heat, a bit more dusty cocoa, modest roasted malt sweetness. Tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours beautifully black with a big Guinness tan head. Smoky, peppery aroma. Not extreme tho. Med body or better. Flavor goes smoky, delicious chocolate, then peppery. Draft at Uber. This was a surprise to me. I’ve been shying away from smoked beers lately, since my last few encounters have been with liquid bandaids. However, this one works really well for me. Opaque, dark brown pour. Aroma: ash, roast, chocolate, coffee. Taste: campfire, with nice chili pepper at the back of the throat in the finish -- not overpowering, just really well-integrated into the rest of the experience. Reasonably dry, full body, average carbonation. Overall: Too bad it was last call -- I’d happily drink another.

On tap @ Strong Ale 2013. Black pour with a khaki head. Aroma is pretty roast forward with a lot of smoke, soap, and cocoa powder. Mild head, coffee, and a touch of earth. Tap at Strong Ale Fest. Low haze deep red pour. Nice latte foam. Nose is gamey, raw animal, deer, slight plastic. Pretty nuts. Taste is richer/waxy dark chocolate, mild heat from the chipotles, dried guajillo chilies. Palate is just mildly chalky. Still, this has some serious potential. On tap. Black with a thin tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, smoke, and peppers. Thick creamy palate. Sweet dark chocolate up front with a smokey and subtle chipotle flavor following and finishing dry and bitter. Nice.
