Almanac is proud to introduce our first IPA! Brewed to highlight California-grown hops, our Single Origin Chinook IPA is hopped exclusively using hops harvested in 2012 from the Hops-Meister Hop Farm in Clearlake, California. Brewed with 2-row, Vienna and Crystal Malts, this unfiltered IPA puts the character of local hops up front with a pungent grapefruit peel aroma, strong bitterness and lingering hop finish.
California once overflowed with hop fields. Today, all of those hops have long since been replaced by grapes, but small farm hops are making a comeback, thanks to farmers like Marty and Claudia Kuchinski at Hops-Meister Hop Farm in Clearlake, California. Tall spires of hops reach for the sky and the air is fragrant with hop aromas. This IPA celebrates the local hop growers in California reviving the traditional hop trellis lining the California hills.

After about a year, I was finally able to get confirmation from two sources that this was the beer I had. Draft pour pint at the Hop and Hound on 9/30/2014. From my notes. Pours a nice bright orange color with infinite head and lacing. Really thick body, creamy with a huge citrus flavor. Fresh hop filled flavor throughout with a low bitter grapefruit finish. Glad I finally figured this one out, it kinda bothered me for the longest time. Overall, I loved the beer, Almanac needs to keep doing what they are doing. And also, release beers like this again.

July 28th, 2013 - I enjoyed this brew at the Torrey Pints at Whole Foods in La Jolla, a lovely little enclave for students living nearby and looking for something they don’t have to chug a beer at home. It’s a pretty, murky dark fried food brown color, with a rusty chinook kind of hops smell. More interesting yet is the smell of a pool or a lakeside, fresh like mountain air, and given a touch of grain with a barley and buckwheat edge. Sudsy and prickly, the palate delivers all the brew’s flavors effectively, with a long, lovely taste of chinook hops, toasted bread, and toasted sesame seeds. The aftertaste sweetens the mixture a little bit with some sugar and honey, leaving off with a level and lovely aftertaste.

On tap @ Bambino’s. Pours hazy dark golden with thin lacy white head. Aroma is mild lightly oaky pale malt with earthy floral hops. Taste is crisp clean pale malt with dry lightly bitter finish. Nothing fancy, but the hop character shines here without much interruption.

UPDATED: SEP 12, 2015 This one left me a little surprised. Was expecting a standard US IPA - but I was getting some of the taste of a Belgian pale ale! I like both and rated accordingly - but I’ll have to try this one again sometime to confirm my first impressions.

Tap at Vine Cottage. Pours golden with a creamy white head. Nose is grapefruit, cat pee. Flavor follows, predominantly bitter with just slight sweet malt. Medium mouthfeel. Ok but slightly too bitter for me.

On draft at the Tap Room. Citrus, pine, resin, cat piss. Not much malt in this one. Pretty tasty though. Very drinkable. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft. Amber beer with a cream head. Pine aroma. Pine and grapefruit flavor. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Pine and grapefruit linger with backing malt.

Zymurgeist2 (2474) - Redwood City, California, USA - JUL 20, 2013
On tap at Gourmet Haus. Moderate grapefruit aroma subsides quickly. Slight malt background. Pours a somewhat hazy honey orange with full white head. Restrained orange hop flavor with cracker malt back. Aggressive bitterness dominates too much.
