Almanac Spring 2012 Biere de Mars

Traditionally brewed in March (Mars), this classic French-style farmhouse ale has a warm amber hue, light caramel aroma and toasty malt and dried fruit flavors. Ours is balanced with a touch of earthy anise spice from organic baby fennel grown by Grant Brians at his Heirloom Organic Gardens in Hollister, California.

oof, this is completely oxidized. Paper and wet dog with some cardboard. Thats it.

22oz bottle - I’ve enjoyed both Almanac beers but feel they’ve both been priced far outside of the quality one receives. I really like the idea of brewing wth fennel, and the vegetable does come thru albeit in light touches and not bonking you on the head with it. Aroma is definitely phenolic and spicy, light citrus, anise, earthy and some sweetness is picked up. Flavors seem to center around earthy fruit notes, some herbal quality that coule be described as anise-like, and it finishes bready and malty. I take points off the overall due to the overpriced tag on this. It’s a nice beer though. Couldn’t complain about anything inside the bottle.

A- Pours a deep, hazy, ambery copper color with a small, off white head that fades quickly with little lacing. S- Piney, light caramel, fairly faint. T- Piney, fennel, herbal qualities, slightly mettalic, bready, doughy, cloying residual sweetness and a sharp tinge of bitterness. M- Medium bodied with lots of carbonation. D- Doesn’t really come together for me. It could be that it is passed its prime but the residual sweetness, herbal qualities and mettalic notes make this less than drinkable.

Bottle acquired via trade some time ago. Not sure who. Finally cracked. Pours a deeper orange amber hue, gentle haze but near transparent. Darker glow, dulled middle, with some more fiery fall orange glow on the edges and bottom. Lively carbonation shows cakey offwhite head atop. Firm cakey layer sticks around well as a firm layer, laces well enough. Aromas show gentle soap, earthy florals and gentle yeasty life, subtle fennel grows, doughy and bready malts, cereal with a gentle slant of gentle darker, more substantial malt elements. Some more fennel, subtle herbal qualities, earthy and floral hops, gentle dandelion. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, gentle oxidized malts meet a gentle yeasty element, subtle spice, firmer herbal spice and florals, earth. Touches of straw, grainy malt, bread and a subtle faint carmelized element. Middle is a bit sweeter, gentle bread, dough, subtlle melon and light fruity life. Touches of florals, herbal coolness, earth. Some gentle touches of body show up a bit more. Backend is a bit carmelized, a bit more oxidized with a subtle spicy ginger quality. Finish is a bit stale, bready and earthy. While this isn’t bad and is certainly drinkable, it’s a bit stale and past it’s prime. The nuance aside from that herbal quality and more dry feel up froont seems lost on me. Ok. Pretty pour.

Ouch. I’ve tried almanac beers before and I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Their one with plums was delicious and so I figured I’d give this one a shot. Not nearly as impressive. It was painfully cloying and sweet. I did pick up some of the spices and whatnot that they added but it was all overshadowed by the intense sweetness.

750 ml bottle from bytemesis- thanks again! Pours a cloudy yellow-orange with some bubbles that accumulate on the inner edge. Aroma of grass, sweet malts, florals, and cereal. Flavor of dry grains, grass, soap, and corn flakes. Light-medium bodied, with low to moderate carbonation and a malty mouthfeel with just a little bit of bitterness. This is a decent beer but I never, ever would have guessed it’s supposed to be a biere de garde.

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, hazy dark orange pour with white head, aroma brought notes of slight biscuit, bread, hints of red fruits, touch of toffee and caramel, touch of spice in there as well, kind of hard to tell. Taste is a mix of metallic, hints of oak, slight caramel, toffee, slight spice, finishing fairly metallic, off. Not very good, but pretty old.

Bottle @ home, via trade with bytemesis. Thanks Mike! Pours a clear dark orange appearance with a nice light brown head. A bit oxidized, light caramel, cracker/bready, light citrusy aroma. Somewhat tangy, goopy, toasted malty, orange fruity, somewhat tangy, sweet, earthy/herbal flavor. This seems to be a bit old, unfortunately.
