Sampled at the W&C Beer Fest 2014. It poured a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma was of roasted malts, rye, nuts and toasty notes. The taste was of roasted malts, chocolate, rye and citrus hops. seymour (2045) - Maplewood, Missouri, USA - MAY 12, 2014
Tasted fresh on tap in a shaker glass at the brewery tasting room. It poured a hazy medium brown colour with sudsy beige foam, long-lasting with lace. Big but balanced: nice chewy grainbill, caramelly, bready, nutty, toasty, VERY roasty, almost smoky, spicy, with pungent American hops to match, great citrusy balance. Tasted like pumpernickel toast with burnt crusts and bitter orange marmalade. Medium body and carbonation, lingering multi-layered aftertaste. My favourite by far of all Alpha offerings so far. I’ve never understood the whole Black-IPA-with-no-trace-of-dark-grain-aspects fad. Here is a well-crafted Black IPA unafraid to showcase the desirable traits of Roasted Barley, the darkest grain of all. Get some while it lasts!
