A big sweet bourbon -bal barley wine with caramel and some slight cherry cordial character. Not easy to drink a lot of but pretty tasty in spurts.

chestnut brown colour, soft carbonation. aroma is raisins, nuts, bourbon, vanilla. taste like aroma, some bread and sweet but not overly. pours thick, mouthfeel is very slick and dense. the alcohol is very well hidden, no fusels, no harsh taste. i’m not a big fan of barley wines but this one is supersmooth and tasty. great beer, great sipper! bottle

Yields a clean hazelnut brown to ember color with a small, light brown head. Smells of spicy Bourbon with a hint of coconut among scented wood, wrapped up by dried, sugared wild berries. Very intriguing as for its focussed complexity, sweet and decadent, reminiscent to the complexity of a port wine, also as for its prominent fruit quality on the nose. Offers molasses, glazed caramel and a healthy amount of rock sugars. Has a medium bodied mouthfeel, slick and oily, malty and sweet, with a balancing Bourbon dryness, revealing a satisfying warmth. Offers sweet caramel from the very beginning, lots of toffee and a whiff of licorice round out the foundation of this. Sweet and full, decadently accompanied by a slowly evolving Bourbon appearance. The Bourbon establishes the balance in this, adding an alcoholic warmth and dryness to the flavors, as well as spicy coconut bark. All of this gets perfected by the berries from the nose, ripe and sweet, giving even more depth to the long lasting toffee. So this is two things for me at the same time - the beer is dangeriusly drinkable, a most enjoyable, flawless sipper. At the same time, this is challengingly complex with lots and lots of layers, all benefitting from each other. On top of this, there is the whiskey barrel, lending not only more omph to the taste but also a very pleasant and needed balance to the otherwise overly sweet beer.

At the Barleywine event. Aroma is caramel, toffee, booze, barrel, somewhat harsh. Appearance is amber, light tan head, clear. Taste is caramel, toffee, booze, barrel, great (get it?). Mouthfeel is medium to heavy body, light carbonation, boozy caramel aftertaste. Overall, it’s real nice.

Bottle at a tasting at Toronado, San Diego, with Chris and the gang. Letar copper/amber beer with a decent beige head. Malty brown sugar aroma, caramel, raisins, plums, some chocolate. Malty fruity flavor, caramel, grapes, raisins, figs, some warming alcohol. Really nice.

From notes. Enjoyed this during the 2nd Annual Kelly’s Island Bottle Share on September 18. 375 mL bottle. The pour is a nice dark ruby with a thin ring of khaki head and no lace. The aroma is definitely hoppy up front. There is a nice sweet caramel malt, a light vanilla, a good oak, and a hint of alcohol on the back end. This is really well balanced and lovely. I just wish the hops were more muted here. The flavor is much of the same. The hops are present throughout, and the barrel, light vanilla, sweet toffee and caramel all just ride along balancing nicely. The mouth feel is thick and chewy with a soft carbonation and a really sweet caramel and light alcohol on the finish. This is a damn good barleywine, but I wish it were more English style.

500 ml bottle to snifter. Looks good; a fairly transparent caramelish brown with light beige head that dissipates into lacing pretty quickly. Smells bittersweet with notes of caramel, toffee, oak, and a bit of bourbon. Tastes like it smells with a pleasant medium-full to full-bodied mouthfeel. Good beer.

Bottle share at RBB. Pour is deep amber/brown with no head. Aroma and flavor of dark brown sugar, caramel, oak chips, vanilla, maple, booze, and toffee. Finish is very sweet for a barleywine, but the alcohol is hidden well.

2015 500ml. Dark brown. Unsweetened toffee, butterscotch. Oak. Very bitter for a barrel aged barleywine. Doesnt seem like anywhere close to 15%. Decent stuff, but definitely overrated/overhyped.
