Bottle, 7.7%. Fruity and refreshing hop aroma. Almost clear golden colour. Big stable white head. The flavour is fruity, semi-sweet to begin with, but dries out a bit. Clean and well-balanced. Almost too clean for the style, but that might not be a bad thing. Semi-anonymous but very drinkable.

(bottle) slightly hazy golden colour with a frothy white head. aroma of heavy grass and powdered sugar, with some teriyaki sauce, vanilla and walnuts. flavour is more grass and walnuts, slightly oxidized, with some hints of roasted malts, yeast slurry, raisins and a semi-dry finish. medium- to heavy-bodied with average carbonation.

* Old rating, 0,75l cork-bottle, Jahrgang 2010. Schade!

UPDATED: DEC 2, 2014 750ml bottle served in a snifter glass. A: Beautiful presentation: corked bottle with a nice golden label. However, when opened, it does not present any strong carbonation to justify its cork. Pours a clear orange color forming a small fainting white head that has low retention and leave only few spotty lacings in the glass S: Strong notes of toffee, caramel malts and honey. Quite sweet in the nose. Quite fruity too with some notes of grapes and raisins. Notes of flowery hops. A bit boozy in the end T: Sweet upfront. Notes of toffee, caramel malts, honey, grapes, raisins. Light but present bitterness. Again, some alcohol notes of the end M: Heavy body. A bit molasses. Medium to low carbonation. Bittersweet aftertaste O: Medium drinkability. Not a big deal. I was expecting much more but it sounds like Germans should be more concerned about producing good Lager and not bad Ales... 75cl bottle sample on site after guided tour @Alpirsbach 4V2014. Where to start? They give you beer sampling vouchers to sample any beer after the tour, but this is €1,50 extra... Introduced by the tour guide as the cream of the crop, top of the range: "We are currently the only German brewery producing such a strong abbey ale. It is a perfect aperitif, or something for special occasions, but also great with dessert. Beware, a bottle costs €9,90" (around at Getränkemärkte for a good year for €8,50) / Pours flat oily golden into a small 20cl snifter that has been clinically rinsed in the dishwasher, hence no head at all. Good start, Alpirsbachers. Strong herbal honey aroma, grassy notes, cultured grains. Taste is a bit of a best of Belgian strong ale, with distinct German Heller Bock yeast characteristics: contained, not fragrant, but buried under the surface are dense almonds, more wild honey, pear, herbal and pollen-like hops with quite some bittering power and always some alcohol fumes barely kept at bay. Smooth yet oily mouthfeel, with a ponderous and lingering, quite joyless metallic-bitter finish. / Not the first German strong ale experiment that starts from an excellent premise and prime ingredients, but gets the fermentation, aromatics and above all the upscale target marketing wrong, or too clinically correct. There is more to brewing a tasty Belgian strong ale than stripping a Belgian yeast strain and setting it to work at perfect reinheitsgebietende laboratory conditions. Cannot imagine this would age well. Please introduce the brewmaster to Gouden Carolus or even Augustijn for more relaxed and aromatic benchmarks? / Currently available in three different brightly coloured pastel boxes, a perfect gift for your 20 year old niece or grandma.

I tedeschi che copiano in modo così i belgici, in effetti mi ha un pò sorpreso. Nel complesso potabile, ma non certo indimenticabile...

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks Alex Shmoo-Shmoo. Jahrgang 2011. Pours yellow with a small head, aroma of honey, sweetness, syrup, caramel, malt liquor, flavor of herbs, bitter and untasty, medium bodied

75 cl bottle @ Timo A. Jahrgang 2012.
Pours clear golden color with a small head. Aroma of ripe fruits, toffee, yeast, wood and some juicy notes. Flavor of apricot, peach, wood, some yeast and juice, faint alcohol throughput. Medium carbonation, moderately sourish palate. A bit too juicy for me, alcohol comes through a bit also.

750 ml bottle, thanks Timo A. Pours a slightly golden colour with a minimal white head. Aroma of rhubarb, sweet malts and grass. Flavour of sweet malts, rhubarb, alcohol and pear. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Nice and warming but a bit dull.
