Smoke is not immediately apparent in the aroma, but a sip removes any doubts. This is obviously lightly smoked and this serves to enhance the maltiness rather than overpower it as is sometimes the case. The palate is smooth which makes it easy to drink but it is probably better to sip this beer to truly appreciate its tastes. Excelent copper brown colour and nice old world feel to the bottle (now only has the smaller neck label)

schuim (36) - NETHERLANDS - NOV 30, 2001
A bit to subtle in my taste. A little sweet and the smokeness is to little.

Good rocky head, appealing ruby-brown, props for the bottle get this a 5 for appearance. Aroma is smoke and caramel. Toffee and subtle pecan/smokey flavor, with perhaps the faintest bit of phenols. A damn fine glass with a hearty meal.

HansJM (358) - NORWAY - NOV 20, 2001
A very tasty brew. Not as much smoke as in the normal smoked beers, but caramel, of course. And some hints of apples in the aftertaste.

muzzlehatch (4975) - Beloit, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 17, 2001
In the bottle at the Map Room in Chicago: very light nose, just a trace of smoky sweetness; looks like your typical light brown or red ale; flavor is very lager-ish, sweet but not all that full of character. It is only in the end that an awesome smokiness appears, and for that this beer should be tried by smoke fans. For others, so-so.

Admiral (524) - Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 2, 2001
Good, but really bizarre. I'd drink this with Japanese food, oddly enough...

joet (2675) - Wilsonville, Oregon, USA - SEP 24, 2001
Nice color and foam. Caramel and something of a cocoa in the light, leaf smoke aroma. A tangy citric finish. Not near as gnarly as the Schlenkerlas. Better as it warms. Interesting.

dins (266) - Texas, USA - JUL 6, 2001
If this is lightly smoky I don't wish to go near anything heavily smoked. Not my stein of beer anyway. COuldn't really get past the smoke to taste much else.
