UPDATED: FEB 2, 2015 From Gene’s in Lincoln Square. Not an outstandingly complex Doppelbock more a easy drinking doppelbock. Some of the that malty flavor that other doppelbocks have that is reminiscent of soy sauce(but in a good way) but only a little. A bit thin. I liked it but it isn’t going to win best in category. Serving: Bottle

From a 2L growler/fliptop bottle. It was a gift, I don’t really know the provenance. Dark gold brown. Sour wheaty aroma. Eggy sweet. Odd, but drinkable.

500ml bottle. Aroma is malty, light nuts, some dark berries. Appearance is brown with a light brown-ish head. Taste is light bitter and sweet. A light dryness. A very nice Bock.

Not a very good doppelbock. Just malty, not much else. Pours an ugly clear brown. Smells and tastes of malt. Tasted at the BevMo Holiday Beer Fest.

Toast and light bread aroma. Clear light maple with a full white head. Thin mouthfeel with slight malt. Lacking flavor.

Aroma has rich malt character. Lots of toasted bread with sweet caramel notes. A but of a raisin fruitiness to the beer. A touch stale as well. No diacetyl and only a hint of a hop aroma. Light alcohol is present in aroma as it warms. A touch of a nuttiness is also present. Pours a beautiful copper brown with ruby highlights. Light tan head that is a bit on the thin side with poor retention and little lacing. Flavor starts out with toasted bread and some nuts but has a background sweetness to it with some dark caramel notes. Light fruitiness and no diacetyl. No hop flavor but moderate bitterness to cut through the sweetness. Finish has a bit of staleness. Esters include raisins, and light banana and cider. A touch of alcohol in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium light carbonation. Astringency is low but present. Moderate alcohol warmth. Overall this is a decent bock but not amazing. A bit too fruity for style and also tastes a bit on the old side. The melanoidins have pretty good complexity though showing toast, caramel and nuts. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2 liter flip-top growler from my sister-in-law. Pours a clear, deep amber-brown colored body with a finger-width, creamy, beige head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is clean and malty sweet with some caramel and slightly bready toffees, dark fruits, a light earth, and a hint of toast. Flavor is similar. Sweetly malted with some caramel and toffees with a touch of bready toast. Some dark fruits and a balancing earthy hop throughout with some noticeable alcohol, but not enough to distract. Finishes clean and malty smooth with some nice dark fruits and a light bitterness. Medium length aftertaste following a medium, smooth body and a soft, medium-light carbonation. Overall, a clean and easy drinking doppelbock. Nothing crazy, but it hides the alcohol pretty well and stays balanced. Not bad.

Poured from the 2l growler. This was a pleasant doppelbock. Aroma was caramel, malty, toffee. Palate is medium full body, starts oily and think but finished watery and thin with a long carmel malt on the tongue. Overall pretty good.

theOptimator (385) - Sacramento, California, USA - NOV 23, 2011
Aroma is malty, toffee, noble hops. Appearance is brown and red with very small head. Taste is malty toffee caramel noble hops. Hint of roast. Alcohol slightly present. Palate is medium+. Malt lingers. Overall decent. Drinkable in large quantities for such a big beer.
