Big bottle in Brussels. Hazy brown beer. Nose of strong malts, dark berries, sweet. Taste is oaky, with vanilla, sweet. Lots of things going on. Warm finish. Alengrin (5376) - BELGIUM - SEP 6, 2014
The burgundy barrel-aged Melchior, with cream white, coarse, milky head and deep copper colour like the other Melchiors, hazy with large protein flakes. Strong fruity aroma of peach, apple sauce, brown sugar, cognac, mint, liquorice, cinnamon, oak, grapes, rosewater. Mellow sweet fruity taste, apple, grape, full caramelly and honeyish maltiness with complex spicy notes, woody finish with floral hops and warming, brandy-like alcohol, long and dry. Great, but somehow I found the bourbon aged version a bit better. CapFlu (5127) - Victoria, British Columbia, CANADA - SEP 28, 2012
(75cl bottle) Courtesy of Jonas. Pours a huge frothy, quick dissipating head atop an orange head. Lots of sediment. Very sour with a honey overtone.

Cloudy brown beer. Dry and softish palate. A real gob full is this beer! Soft oaky tones with just a touch of vanilla. Red wine richness. Bubblegum esters and Belgian sweetness. Slight tart fruits. Complex and interesting if not quite as joined up as it could be. Talk about mixing the grape and the grain - induced a foul hangover!
(Bottled, 0.75l, 11.5% ABV) Murky orange-brown with a very small head. The Bourgogne barrel is evident in the nose, with grainy-caramely maltiness, dried fruit, and some typical aged Belgian character. Somewhat similar to Stille Nacht. Flavor is even more bourgogney, with grainy-caramely maltiness strongly present, and even some surprisingly fresh, exotic-citrusy fruitiness. Alcohol well hidden. Medium to full body, low CO2, refreshing. A reasonably successful barrel ageing, resulting in a complex and freshly fruity flavor.
11/12/12/12/11/12
