750mL bottle. Poured translucent, lighter orange with a white head that fizzled out really quickly.. kind of shiny. The aroma picked up more Calvados than anything else, with cognac and related dark fruit backing it up.. some oak and dry, peppery yeast in there as well.. this was nice, but it was almost all barrel. The flavor opened with tangy oak and sour/lightly-metallic boozage.. dark fruits, honey, and a bit of biscuity malt at the core.. lots more Calvados and peppery yeast on the long, dry, belly-warming finish.. just about an "8". Medium-plus bodied with low, but prickly carbonation on the palate.. the barrel stole the show, but it did provide some very interesting character. SaintMatty (7364) - Uppsala, SWEDEN - DEC 13, 2009
330ml Bottle - Hazy amber with a foamy head. Alcoholic aroma with peach and dried fruit. Fruity taste with peach, toffee, dried fruit and a moderate bitterness. mjs (7357) - Helsinki, FINLAND - DEC 26, 2010
(Bottle, 0.75 l, at the 16th Kerstbierfestival) The beer piured yellowish brown and cloudy. Its head was small, sparse and white. Aroma had malts, vanilla and apples. Palate was full bodied, warming and dry with low carbonation. Flavours were malts, vanilla, apples, sweetness, fruitiness, wood and bitterness. Aftertaste was woody and bitter. Quite weird combination of flavours that didn’t work well enough. caesar (7153) - Bunnik/Utrecht, NETHERLANDS - OCT 23, 2009
Bottled. Cloudy golden color, big head. Aroma of the spicy mustardy melchior, combined with oak aged notes and hint of green apples, some liquor, hint of yeast. Nicely balanced taste, fruity, slight yeast, the spicy mustard flowing through. CaptainCougar (7133) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - MAY 15, 2011
On tap at the 2011 Max’s Belgian Fest: Pours a clear deep golden amber with a spotty-lacing ring of white bubbles. Has a big complex sweet cognac and oak nose with light fruity toffee. Starts with pretty good fullness and mild carbonation with light grape and apple fruitiness before a thinner warming finish. Pretty unique and complex brew, but could be a little more drinkable.

A Mes rate. Bottle from Alvinne but drunk with our Weasel over at his. nuplastikk (6277) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 5, 2014
A murky orange blonde colour with a thin white head. Lovely aroma. Calvados a plenty with some good barrelly notes, slight spice and cinnamon plus an awesome sugary hit too. Excellent! The flavour follows on in an equally rich form. Big boozy hits work unusually well. Glorious sweet and sour finish. Bloody lovely.
Wow. Fantastic. Brings a liqueur touch. Maybe a little overwhelming on my palate at this point in the evening. Doesn’t really strike me as "Belgians"..a creature unto itself. Hardcore barrel treatment. Tasty, brutal spirit/beer hybrid. TheBeerGod (6224) - Newport News, Virginia, USA - NOV 19, 2011
Bottle - 750mL crowned. Cap shows "MELCHIOR CALV2 14 JUN 2016 Lot 9 JI". Label says 11% ABV. Pours rusty amber with a short smattering of tan bubbles on the surface. Aroma is green apple, grape skins, wet oak, white wine, dried fruit and funky yeast. Hints of sour fruit as well. Taste is big oak notes, faint vanilla, caramel, sour fruit notes, unripe berries, grape skins, faint apple, damp earth, funky yeast and faint caramel. Body is light-medium with very soft carbonation. Dry mouthfeel especially during the finish. Ends with more grape skins, white wine, green apple, wet oak, funky yeast, sour berries, candied fruit, light earthiness and soft caramel. thirdeye11 (6160) - Dallas, Texas, USA - JUN 12, 2013
(750ml bottle) clear gold, no bubble. Nose is rich, calvados barrel, grape/vinous, alcohol heavy. Taste of alcohol, calvados, white wine barrel, grapes, vinous, thin body. Glouglouburp (6103) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 15, 2012
In short: An unusual woody big amber ale
How: Bottle 750ml, consumed when probably around one year of age
The look: Cloudy amber body topped by a small off-white head
In long: Nose is strange, the base beer is unusual with a strange spiciness and a woody character that is like the smell of a woodshop. Taste is grape skin, a lot of wood, notes of white wine, smooth hard-to-name spiciness, Granny Smith apples, banana peels, a bit of booze. Woody dryness in the finish. Not a complex beer by any means but it was certainly not boring, actually it was kind of weird. It was also surprisingly drinkable for an 11.5% beer. Strangely drinkable, the beer is weird but also not very tasty/intense so I went through a 750ml quite easily even if this wasn’t particularly exiting. Not bad but certainly not worth the hefty price tag3, but it’s alright I’ll have plenty of money soon, I told my boss I deserve a raise, I’ve been working here for over 3 years and I worked really hard yesterday.
