Alengrin (5629) - BELGIUM - JUN 26, 2017
From tap at Foeders in Amsterdam. Atypically strong Flemish red by Alvinne in collaboration with Naparbier. Cobweb-lacing, pale yellowish beige, moussy head over a hazy burgundy brown beer with ruby hue. Aroma of sweet sherry, passion fruit, rosehip, dry red wine, caramel, dust old overcoat, old furniture woodiness, redcurrant, dried plums. Estery, fruity onset, sweetish core surrounded by drying lactic sourness, hinting at redcurrant, passion fruit and blue grape peel, some balsamico-like vinegar acidity but mildly so, over a rounded, bit bready, caramelly maltiness; drying woodiness in the finish with a very sherry-like character to it as well as something interestingly ’dusty’ (as in old cupboards) and some warming, but otherwise well-hidden alcohol. Very well executed ’super strong’ interpretation of the style, complex and perfectly in balance, with that rounded, ’moelleux’ malt underground this style needs to balance the sourness.
