A Rye Braggot

English: One great thing about the craft beer world is how erratic it can be. To be completely honest, until just recently we had never even heard of Hermit Thrush Brewery – simply pronouncing their name proved a major challenge for most of us! But one day – out of the blue – we received an email from Joan Bulzacchelli and Victoria Banerjee from the brewing crew at Hermit Thrush, asking if they could join in on a brewing day at Amager since they were travelling Europe – half in private, half to visit breweries. As we only have the deepest respect for Vermont breweries we suggested turning the brewing day into an actual collaboration day, and a recipe was developed via email with one of the brewery’s masterminds Christophe Gagne. Bees For My Honey is a tribute to a product that is local to both breweries, a wonderful product that we both hold in high regard: honey! And it’s also a tribute to those wonderful buzzing little aviators called the honey bees. A friendly lil creature we have been taking for granted for way too long, only to realize that they seem to be abandoning us in recent years. We can’t blame them, but when honey becomes a scarce product, it may be too late to invite them back, because they just may have found a safer haven without pesticides and pollution. Save the bees – we need ‘em!!

his rather murky/hazy rye soup presents an aroma of fruity sweet oranges and spicy sweet malts. Taste is sweet malty with a touch of honey and orange peels. Rye peppers shine through and gives this one a quite rough approach and the bitterness is higher than expected. Alcohol is semi-well hidden. A sipper. Interesting, but maybe not a real winner.

Bottle. An unclear orange-colored beer with a dense, lacing-leaving off-white head. Fruity, orangey aroma with a wee honey touch, some spiced hints, tropical fruits, pine cones and a malty note. It’s full-bodied, a bit heavy on the carbonation perhaps, faintly warming and with a very soft bitterness. The flavor has pine cones, honey notes, generic fruityness and some malt hints. Lasting fruity, lightly honey-ish finish. A very pleasant one indeed. Perhaps a bit too heavy on the carbonation, else it’s a fine brew. 180210

Endnu en god øl fra Amager. Masser af fylde og velsmag. Tilpas med humle og bitterhed.

Bottle @ friends/chef. Appearance: pours unclear amber with good white soapy head and lacing. aroma/taste: barley, light bread, honey, oranges and floral notes. palette: strong malty and light yeasty aroma, light sparkling carbonation, medium body, average to notable sweetness, somewhat balanced by a medium bitterness, average to long duration and a watery texture. Overall: refreshing strong ale with some Belgian inspiration

Soft gusher. Big fizzy-creamy mediumlasting head, hazy. Aroma is slightly dry sour-ish mineraly, weeds, minerals, fruit stones, grass, hay, flowers, yeast, bark, almond essence, moss, hints of honey, booze. Taste is slightly dry sour-ish mineraly, weeds, yeast, fruit stones, almond essence, old moss, old sour wash cloth, bark, metal tank, bark, sour grass, hints of honey. Medium to longlasting bitterness, boozy and harsh floral mouthfeel, fizzy carbonation. Crap!

Bottle. My first braggot, I believe. Hazy copper with a medium sized diminishing white head with good lace and regeneration. Pleasant floral nose with honey, citrus and hay. The flavour has hay, wood, honey, dry flowers, minerals. Full body, warming alcohol, medium sweet and bitter. Warming finish with rye and honey. I am unsure about what to feel about this, but it is not all bad and the honey shows a lot.

bottle from boxbeers. hazy yellow, small white head. aroma of malts, honey, tea, a little bit of a herbal touch. flavor is malty, herbal, "bitter honey" if that makes any sense at all, faint sweet yellow fruits, like a belgian triple. flavor is somewhat confusing to me, i think it might resemble a strong belgian ale more than anything else i know about. Beer has lots of flavor, the alc. is quite well hidden, i had expected 5.6% or so when i tasted it, and was somewhat surprised to see it tagged as 9% here. In my world, that is a sign of good brewing craftmanship ( and interestingly confusing unexpected hangovers)

adamnase (1084) - Kronoby, FINLAND - OCT 3, 2017
500ml bottle from Pours hazy pale orange coloured with a mediumsized white head. Aroma has flowers, honey, spices(pepper) and malts. Taste is medium sweet with a medium presence of honey and spices. Intense sweet honey finish.
