Slainte!

English: Wee Heavy, Scotch or Scottish Ale – to be honest we don’t really care. We wanted to take the best of British brewing traditions and add a subtle edge of peaty smoke for that special Islay feeling. Many people have asked us if we took that feeling so far that we actually DID wear kilts during the brewing of this beer. Well, we honestly believe that not all questions necessarily need an answer. But yes, photos DO exist. And no, they shall never be revealed… If you firmly believe that all British-style ales are low in alcohol and low in carbonation then Smoking Scotsman will prove you wrong. This is a beer to be savoured in small sips in front of a roaring fire back home at the manor – preferably with a big plate of haggis. Sláinte! – or whatever.

Ingredienser: Vand, Malte: Pale, Special B, Crystal, Peated, Dehusked Chocolate, Humle: East Kent Goldings, Gær: Edinburgh Ale

(Bottle) Reddish brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, slightly smoky nose with dried fruit (raisins, prunes), caramel, a touch of smoke, rye bread, some coffee and brown sugar. Malty, sweetish taste with notes of caramel, brown sugar, coffee, raisins, crisp-bread, a touch of smoke and a balanced spicy bitterness in a fairly sweet finish. Full body, quite sweet. Tasty and fairly sweet wee heavy with a gentle smoke touch. Nice one.

Way to sweet for my taste. Not malty complexity as I love in this style but just overly sweet. The aroma is also very sweet and lacks complexity. Extremely full bodied. The light smokiness adds a little balance but in the end it is just way too sweet.

Bottle split at Amager Brewery mini tasting, RBESG ’15 day 3, thanks to Papsoe, 22/08/15. Hazed amber with a decent beige covering. Nose is malt forward, brown bread, fruit loaf, pinch of spice. Taste comprises more smoke character, sweet licks, toffee, candied fruit peel. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok for style, subtle smoke, perhaps a touch overly sweet.

thomat (3828) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - SEP 1, 2015
Bottle @ Amager Bryghus. Hazy, dark amber with atiny tan head. Fruity and malty. Fruit, malt, hops and sweetness. Full body with a long bitter sweet finish.

It is very long since I have tasted scotch ale, but I have always loved this beer-type because of the rich malt flavor with lots of flavor notes. Smoking Scotsman disappoints me not quite, yet lacking a bit. The aroma is full of dark caramel and a little touch of smoked malt. The flavor is very sweet at first impression. It has a sweet taste of brown sugar that’s just on the edge of being too much. Slightly smoky tang keeps just the edge that makes it familiar. The tastes of dark caramel and a bit of ripe berries. Malt character is a bit like wet forest with a little truffle bitter aftertaste. I had wanted a beer with a little less malt sweetness and a little more smoked malt, so the overly expensive price of nearly 60 Dkr. It will with no doubt be good for rice pudding (because of the sweetness), or just for enjoiment in front of the fireplace (which brewery suggest).

Countbeer (6592) - Best of E-Town mit 2 Brauhausen, NETHERLANDS - SEP 22, 2014
Bottle: Served in a Chouffe glass: Thin beige vanilla colored lacing. Hazy orange amber body. Aromas of barley malts, cream, molasses, raisin/prunes, sweet wood, sweets, balanced aroma. Flavours of prunes, brown sugars, barley malts, cream, bitters, sweets, raisin, malts, sweet wood, toast, molasses and some wood. Aftertaste is a mix of barley malts, sticky tones, dark fruits, brown sugars and bitters. Low carbo, creamy silky mouthfeel, medium to full bodied and a sticky texture. Delicious stuff. Thick and balanced. Smooth, sticky and no trace of alcohol. Very well done!

Batch 605.

SlovakSniper (5561) - Candiac, Quebec, CANADA - JUL 27, 2014
Batch 605.
