Sacramento’s Special Bitter – Made with English floor malted barley and US grown hops – this balanced triple IPA combines the best of Old World and New World ingredients. Citrus and spice notes are the first to grace your nose, followed by ginger and piney sweetness on your pallet. The finish is full of pine and more spice but balanced with malty sweetness.

UPDATED: NOV 29, 2015 Piney-citrus, typical cascade nose with a touch of malt and bubblegum ester as it warms up and breathes. Bitter with some malty sweetness, but no noble hop flavor. Medium body with a slightly oily mouth feel. Finish is bitter, a touch of harshness, but not at all objectionable. A pleasant IPA, but lacks the complexity that a strong beer should have. Get this flavor in a 5% beer and then you really have a Special Bitter.

Pours from a 22 oz bomber a hazy light amber with a beige head colored head and good lacing. Nose is citrus and floral hops. Medium in body. Smooth mouth feel. Flavor is a nice caramel malt with a lot of hop zip, with citrus, pine, and the floral. The finish is bitter and flavorful with the pine showing up most. This is a very tasty beer and quite easy drinking.

Poured from the bomber into a snifter. Medium amber with a cream colored head. Aroma is caramel malt and some citrusy hops. Flavor is pretty one dimensional. Some pale malt finishing with some earthy hop bitterness. I’d almost liken this more to an English Bitter than an IPA - has bitterness but not much actual hop character/flavor. Medium bodied, lightly astringent. This isn’t horrible by any stretch, it’s just not very exciting or memorable either.

UPDATED: AUG 30, 2014 "Forgettable is being kind. I’ll remember this for the utter lack of any character whatsoever. Shouldn’t there be some hops in an ipa? Said 70 ibu but I sure as hell don’t see it. Their English ipa was actually better, but still sucked."

Pours a golden color with small head . Has bitter grapefruit taste with crisp clean finish. For the price a good IPA worth trying. Good summer beer.

Bottle from wholefoods. Pours copper with white head. Aroma is hops and malt. Taste is more on the malty sweet side than dry bitter hops. Still get some nice hop characteristics

Poured from the bottle, colour is orange some lacing. Aroma is citrusy but really mellow flavour is bitter and citrusy, some spice. This whole beer while bitter was pretty mellow and forgettable but not terrible.

This is more in the English ESB style than in the West Coast IPA style. Pours darker-hue copper, suggesting roasted malts, not much of the piney, grapefruit hops associated with the West Coast style, finishes with nice searing hop bitterness. I think American River ought to position this beer as a West Coast version of an English ESB and they would do very well.

On tap @ American River. Kind of a dark orange color...for an IPA at least. Floral hops, orange peel, and some pine hops on the nose. A bit of sweet bread/malt as well. Flavor is not terribly pungent, but some nice floral hops and orange notes. Bread, pine, and a bit of grass. Mild to moderate bitterness.
