COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our take on the Kölsch style of beer from Köln. A light malt forward beer brewed with a traditional yeast but using locally sourced malt. Fermented at ale temperatures then lagered for 3 weeks to give a clean malty character. The traditional noble hop Tettnang gives spice and depth of flavour before dry hopping with the fruity Galaxy.

Aargh, this is an example of a beer which I know is a good beer but which I just don't like very much. The reason is the strong flavour of, I dunno, spice? I never know quite what to call this flavour, but it's the taste of Hoegaarden Witbier, Franziskaner Weissbier, and, to some extent, the Paulaner Weissbier Dunkel. And it puts me off. It's been called grapefruity, banananaish, clovy, spicy--but I dont want more than malty and hoppy tastes in my beer. I'm not expert enough to say if this powerful flavour is from the Tettnang hops or from the yeast used, or whatever; but it is not my thing. If I wanted a British take on Kölsch, I'd have the lovely Prime Time by Marble Brewery. But why not just a straight Cologne Kölsch, such as the excellent Früh?

Bottle at home in Hackney - big thanks to Matteo for hooking it up. Pours unclear orange-gold with a frothy, white head. The nose holds simple pale grains, hints of biscuits, lemon rind. Light to medium sweet flavour with some doughy notes, cereal, minimal bitterness, nips of hay, a little grassy bitterness. Light bodied with average carbonation. Finishes with more simple pale grains, light grass, doughy biscuits. Pretty basic, but not bad overall.
